What do you think of this name for a boy?

Our surname is Lord. There aren't many boys' names I like, in fact I could probably count them on one hand. I hate all these 'new' names I hear so much these days. But DH and I were sat talking about names while waiting at the hospital the other day and we were looking at names of characters from films we like on IMDB. Anyway one of my favourite films is Gladiator and the main character's name is Maximus. Well I think that's an awesome name to go with Lord. Who would mess with Maximus Lord? Of course we'd call him Max most of the time, which we both like. But what do you think? Is it daft?

Maximilian is a yuk name.

We live in a very middle class area and even here Maximillan is laughed at ( the name not the children ).

Gina I thought for a sec you already had a Spencer and was going to suggest that Max & Spencer might be an in advisable combination!

Mind you, you could always go for Maximus Spencer - almost as good!

Haha Maximus Spencer I love it! I would bit we have personalised things already so too late to change. My other half was winding me up the other day by calling him Callum elliot (cal-el i.e superman) which he could have had but he decided he like Spencer instead!
Bloody mil did try and make the connection between unborn child's initials (csj) and mad cow disease (cjd) when we told her the name which was thoughtful didn't piss me off in the slightest, honestly I get not wanting to have connotations with it but honestly, let me have my moment!

I know a Max Fear which I think is brilliant. I'd go with it. It's unusual and memorable but not stupid.

And no one laughs at him.. He's just Max (or Maxamillian), in the same way that Harry is Harry, and George is George.

Isn't Maxim a lads mag?!

I do prefer Maxwell if I'm honest, but it'll likely get shortened to Max either way, and I think Max Lord sounds great!

Wouldnt it be fabulous to legitimately be called Maximus Lord? I mean, most of us don't end up with awesome surnames to create superhero names with. You have been blessed with opportunity. Take it Grin

I love it. Not a fan of Maximilian. But Maximus Lord is fab. Different obviously but once your child is here it will just suit him and people will get over it-because he's not their kid and he'll be cute. Don't worry about the name not necessarily fitting a persona or vice versa. I come from a family of unusually named children, but you get used to them. If you love it, use it. He's your child.

It's a marmite kinda name so I can see why people are split, but if you wimp out & pick a similar name that's not as grand, you'll probably regret it.

The thing is, you aren't naming a cute baby, you're naming a shy, spotty teenager, a new graduate submitting CVs, a professional 40 year old father of 2, a 70 year old man.

What if your child doesn't have the personality to pull off the name? What if he is shy, retiring and doesn't like attention? What if he hates the movie?

Are you really prepared to shout 'Maximus' across the park?

Maxim Lord or even just Max Lord would be less likely to have him rushing to change it at 16.

You could always call him Maximus as a nickname.

We gave our DD a relatively normal middle name just in case she ever wants to drop the first when she gets to that awkward teenage stage or if she feels it wouldn't suit her as an adult. You could do that.
For the record, if my grandad was called Maximus I would think he was so badass.
