Isla?

I do like this name but just trying to figure out if it's going to be the Rachel of the 80s in 15years time.

I have an Isla.

She's Isla-Mae to be precise, but just gets Isla.

Two of my friends have named their DD's Isla, one of them spelt it Iylah, which j don't like.

It's a lovely name but it's the most popular where I live (south east). Loads of them! If you don't mind having a super popular name then go for it

Thirtynineweeks, funnily enough the Islas I know have parents who are doctors, nurses, teachers, artists and academics.

But then other than professionally I don't know anyone who uses amphetamine or smokes outside the school gates.

OP, I can't help it, the women I know who've called their baby Islam are, in no particular order, 'phet heads, women who go to the shop in their obedience and who smoke at the school gate.

I think it's a gorgeous name but as pp said it can sound like an Island with the wrong surname.

Like Wight, Mann or Dogs Grin

I love the name, but it is incredibly popular at the moment and I do think it will date (outside Scotland). If you like it though, use it!

Interestingly one of the Queen's great granddaughters is called Isla, so the opposite of chav. Perhaps the poster describing it as chavvy does not have contact with people from a broader social strata therefore does not realise the breadth of appeal.

Outside of Scotland it will definitely date. I know several Islas and they're all under 7.

TheNewStatesman just sharing my opinion. Also I am Scottish, I know lots of Islas of all ages- definitely not "unheard of until about 10 years ago".

I wasn't saying Rachel wasn't a nice name, I just had quite a few in my year at school and 2 in my class :-)
I didn't know any older or younger. Same with Isla as I know it's popular among babies now and the only older one I can think of is Isla fisher!

I'm currently in hosp after having twins this week and of the 5 other babies on my ward there are 2 Islas! I do quite like it as a name, didn't think it was over popular but I've heard it 100000 times this week Grin

I know of a tonne of Rachels dd has most of them on her facebook still a nice name mil though, milwas convinced dd2 was Rachel she called her it for 5 weeks after she was born Confused

Also, growing up in Scotland I knew more Islas than Emily's and I never met anyone of my age (70's baby) called Olivia or Oliver till going to an English university and even then not many - now these names are everywhere including Scotland so I don't think it is the case they won't date. Like Isla they are names which have been around a long time but go in and out of fashion.

I only know one Isla aged about 15. It's a lovely name, not common around here.

Btw I only know a couple of Rachels and it's a beautiful name which has never dated.
