Really struggling with names for DD2, DH and I keep coming up with ideas then vetoing for one reason or another.

Portia came up on a thread I read last night and I think it's beautiful. Obv wouldn't want the car connotations but not sure if that's where people's minds would go on first hearing?

What does everyone think?

We have a relatively 'normal' surname and it does flow nicely :-)

So glad there are some positive views as well as the negative ones... I know it does have that bratty connotation but I so want to see past that as I just love the name!

I like it, but it does remind me more of John Cleese's snotty, horsy daughter who wants a nose job in A Fish Called Wanda than of Shakespeare's sparky heroine... (And AFCW did have a joke about calling your daughter after a car in it, from what I remember...)

Me too! I think plain surnames deserve a fancy shmancy first name. Jane Brown sounds a little bit sad whereas Portia Brown sounds marvellous.

It's a beautiful name, I really like it. Would it go with her surname? Portia Smith/Brown wouldn't sound right IMO.

I really like it. If I have another girl Portia is a strong contender. My dd is Xanthe, I think they work well together although my family will say they are both posh names they think I'm a snob (we're not posh)

Car imediatley springs to mind...

After that, a snobby, bratty, stereotypicaly posh and rich, nasty girl who goes to private school, lives off her parents money and has probably never worked in her life...

Also, i would how it is pronounced (porsh-ah), but it doesn't stop me saying it in my head as Port-ee-ah every time

can you tell i don't like it?

Knew one at school. I love it - says 'Shakespeare' to me too.

I automatically think Quality of Mercy and not anything else.
Shakespeare was a playwright for the people.

I wanted it but unfortunately DH is an absolute heathen.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title was Merchant of Venice.

I think it's a lovely name. XH's Dsis was called Portia ( although the family called her Port)
