Anyone met a baby/child called calais?

Dd named calais and wondered if anyone had heard it before/opinions (good or bad) on it.
I'd never heard it as a name until oh mentioned it but I love it now

No seriously I don't mind the bad opinions. It's all taken on the chin. Each to their ownI know one other calais spelt callay but pronounced the same

Agree with PatMullins that the OP did ask for bad opinions as well as good. And anyway, it is surely a matter of fact, rather than opinion, that most people in the UK will associate Calais with the current refugee tragedy. Looking further back, the city has rather a sad and violent history. In particular, it saw terrible fighting and destruction in World War II and a very nasty medieval siege. Those facts would not recommend Calais to me as a name.

Well, the actual Calais is bloody grim, and I'm amazed that anyone would choose it as name inspiration (but at least two people have apparently.) But as a name it's not ugly... Just don't ever take her to France on holiday! Imagine a chic French family introducing themselves 'This is Antoine, and Jean-Michelle, and our little daughter Grimsby!'

Not heard it used on a child. Heard other place names but not Calais. I think it's a truly awful name

I was not criticising, simply offering some information. Paris was named after a Celtic tribe, too, and also - by coincidence - is a male character in Greek mythology.

I have not heard of anyone called Calais because it is a French port, not a girl's name. And I live in a country where you can't just call your child whatever you want because you think it's yooneek, you have to use a recognised name (a human name, not the name of a geographical feature). I'm rapidly coming round to the idea that this rule should be introduced in the UK too.

I have a distant relative with the name and tbh I did snigger a little when I was first told. They are in the US though so I don't think they have the same UK associations with refugee crisis etc

It's pretty horrible criticising op's name choice when her DD has already been named. Her OP makes it clear that's the case.

If it matters

Calais (the place) is named after a celtic tribe that lived there around 2000 years ago - the Caleti.

In Ancient Greek myths, Calais was the son of the North Wind

Today, as others have said, it is a place of suffering and tragedy

No, because it's not a name, it's a grim French port currently home to a huge refugee city. Why on earth anyone would want to name their child after it I can't think.

Does Calais have a special significance to you, OP? Was your daughter conceived on the ferry?

Oh, you've already used if. Fair enough OP, as long as you like it that's all that matters really. Hopefully by the time she understands her name the migrant crisis will be over and her name won't make people think of actual Calais.
