Anyone met a baby/child called calais?

Dd named calais and wondered if anyone had heard it before/opinions (good or bad) on it.
I'd never heard it as a name until oh mentioned it but I love it now

Wow some of these posts are downright nasty.

It's not a name I would choose but each to their own OP.

I know a Cally although she gets asked whether it is short for something A LOT!

There are place names and there are place names.

Calais is not really coming up with the same mental pictures and first impressions as Brooklyn, India, China, Arizona, Paris, Memphis, Austin or even Chelsea.

I do think its worth considering if you are going to use a place name.

Dover. Hull. Harwich. Folkestone.
Dunkirk. Hook. Rotterdam. Zeebrugge.
Fishguard. Pembroke. Swansea. Holyhead.
Plymouth. Poole. Portsmouth.
Le Harve. Cherbourg. Caen.

Never met a Calais.
Have met a few Callie's, a Cally and a Calleigh tho.

Ah lord Op. I can see how Callie is pretty, but Calais? Brooklyn, India etc evoke travelled images, modern hipster etc (or Beckhams). But Calais - naming someone Calais this year reads as a political statement. It's like naming someone Enniskillen in the year of the Enniskillen bombings.

It makes me think of refugees and a few historic battles...
It doesn't sound bad. But I don't associate it with anything particularly positive either.
I personally prefer Calla, Callie, Cleo, Clover or Clea...

Also hoping OP ignores weird negativity being thrown around on here. They all probably have very boring names and are jealous.

(Calais currently has a lot of refugees. So do loads of other places. Give it a rest. There is a lot of hope and kindness in that place alongside suffering).

There is a child at my friends DC school named Calais.
His brother is called Holden.
Holden Calais is a car in Australia.....

I am not sure why you have asked after you have named your (beautiful) baby. Hmm. But seeing you have, I would assume for a baby not this year that it is a (very) political act. I would as various other pp have suggested consider changing it before she is one, callie is nice rather than Dunkirk or Aleppo, if it isn't a political statement. And I am not sure a child's name is the best place for a political statement. Sorry but you did ask!

This is uncomfortable reading. OP I'm sorry people are so nasty. Yes, they are entitled to an opinion but there are ways to word things so as not to be so god damn hurtful!!!

There are plenty of names which are names of places (and vice versa) and they are perfectly valid options.

Are names of colours any more acceptable? Names based on nouns in foreign languages are ok? Flowers? Gemstones? The negative posts seem to suggest that the options given are based on facts and logic, but this is simply not the case (stop being so horrible!)
