Would you give your child your first name as a middle name?

Giving your child your middle name seems quite common, or another relatives first name as a middle name. But I never seem to hear of parents giving a child their first name as a middle name?

I used family names for all the DCs, and nobody felt left out as the other family didn't know the family members in question. Also, some of the names I chose were in common.

I almost gave DD3 my BC name as a middle name (I am known by the Irish version ) but instead gave her another family name that I felt went better with her first name -- the name I chose for my confirmation. DD4 has my middle name as her middle name. It's also the name of one of her aunts on exH's side.

My DB has my Dads name as his middle name and my DN has DB name as his middle name.
My DH and I decided no family link to middle names, this was DH idea as he is named fully after his grandfather (first and middle) and he found it really upsetting when his grandfather died to see his name on a death certificate.

I see no problem with it. Me and my sister have the same mn as my mum's mn. She did this as she didn't get her mum's mn but her younger sister did, and she was very upset and jealous about it (there is a 10 year age gap and my mum was the only girl out of 3 boys at the time). My DD's middle name is my sisters first name. My DD is 7 and she loves that she has a connection to her auntie - as does my sister. I am thinking of using my mn if this baby is a girl - because I think the mn flows well and I like the fact there will be meaning in the mn also, I will ask my DD opinion on it (as I don't want her to feel left out etc...but don't think she would as she has a family name).

If I'd had a daughter she'd have had the Irish version of my name as her middle name.

My name is my grandmother's middle name & I really love that connection to her.

Disregardme · 02/04/2016 00:04

I have my mum's name as my middle name. It makes me feel closer to her as I love the fact she chose me (second born dd) to pass her name into.
My ds has my maiden name as his middle name.

Coldtoeswarmheart · 01/04/2016 23:36

My kids both have my maiden name as their middle name. I don't think it's very different to that really.

Ledkr · 01/04/2016 23:31

Jw. I'm so sorry Flowers

Ledkr · 01/04/2016 23:30

My dd has my name as her middle name.
I always wanted to do that and after 3 boys I fejt Id earned it Grin she loves it and I feel ill live on.

CraigRevelHorwoodsPetCat · 01/04/2016 23:16

DS is Evan Stephen John

Stephen is my DH and FIL name
John is my DF name

Evan is Welsh for John - and it was extremely important to me that DS had John as a middle name. But we couldn't call him John John HmmGrin

Jw35 · 01/04/2016 23:14

Both my girls have variations of my first name. Baby due in July will have my sisters name as a middle name. My sister died yesterday Sad

TheScottishPlay · 01/04/2016 22:44

DS has DH's first name as a middle name. It's also his DM's maiden name. Neither of DH's cousins who have this as a surname have children so it keeps the name going.
DS first name was deliberately chosen to have no family history behind it at all. It's a clasic, solid Scottish name though.

I have the same first name as my DM and both my DGM's first names as middle names. I love them all and would happily have been called any of them.

BreakfastLunchPasta · 01/04/2016 22:31

Dd3 has my first name as her middle name.
We found it difficult to agree on a name for her, and then it was tricky to find a middle name to go with her first name. Dh suggested my name and it went quite nicely.

Chrisinthemorning · 01/04/2016 21:27

DH has his Dad's name as a middle name and DS has DH's name as a middle name.
His full name is quite traditional, scans nicely and TBH we couldn't think of that many boys names we liked. I like but don't love DS name, I'm glad I picked it.
I don't think DS will be embarrassed about his name when older.

WhereTheFuckIsWonderWoman · 01/04/2016 21:22

My middle name is my mother's Christian name. I've no idea why but I love that I have it because she died when I was very young. DD now has the same name as one of her middle names.

mrsschu · 01/04/2016 21:18

I think it's a little odd. I like the idea of giving a child a family name as a middle name but more so along the lines of a grandparent or great grandparent. DD actually has my cousin's name as her middle name as my cousin died shortly before she was born. But I think it would be odd to have given her my name as a middle name.

blackteaplease · 01/04/2016 18:35

Dd has a random middle name, ds1 has dh's name as his middle name as they go well together and ds2 has my late father's name as his middle name. I like it.

calamityjam · 01/04/2016 18:29

I lot of people I know do this. A lot. My ds1 has a middle name that is both his grandfathers first name. Ds2 has my db's name as his middle name, dd has her aunt's name as her middle name and ds3 has a shortened version of dp's name as his middle name. All perfectly normal and tributes to lovely family members. Oh, and ds2 also has the same first name as his grandad's nick name, grandad called John but known as Jack, ds2 named Jack.

HotPotatoOrchestraStalls · 01/04/2016 18:19

It's funny though my ds's middle name happens to be his great grandfathers name and dd's name is the female version of other great grandfathers name.

Neither name rang any connection for me when we chose them in any way, but my parents were delighted and quick to point it out. They seemed to think it was all thought out and deliberate. I was Confused oh err yes, um maybe.

Tbh my own family unit with Dh is really all I feel connected with. People who came years before in the family are of interest of course but I feel no great connection to them to the point that I would think of naming dc after them.

nightandthelight · 01/04/2016 18:15

That was lucky Cointreau :)

People can get very funny about names open although in your case it's strange as it was a name from both sides!

OpenMe · 01/04/2016 18:09

Mil was most put out when we gave ds1 my dad's name as a middle name, despite the fact that it's also her father's first name and dh's middle name. We thought we'd come up with something that would please everyone but just goes to show that's not actually possible

CointreauVersial · 01/04/2016 18:08

nightandthelight - we were lucky - DS's middle name AND DD1's middle name crop up in both families! We were able to kill several birds with one stone.

HotPotatoOrchestraStalls · 01/04/2016 18:08

Probably not. My name is ok I guess, I've always had a vague feeling it sort of doesn't sound like 'me' when it's used. I'd never have chosen it, but hey ho, my name and I have sort of got used to each other now,. I dont love it so much to want to pass it on though .
Family traditions like that seem a bit restrictive to me. I think brand new person, brand new name.

nightandthelight · 01/04/2016 18:01

Out of interest for those who do give their children names from family members does it ever create problems in terms of one side of the family feeling left out? My parents strongly urged me not to use a family name for this very reason and as far as I am aware my DS is the first person in either family to have the names that he has.

juniperdingleberries · 01/04/2016 17:53

It is very interesting to see how traditions are used and names passed on. Tbh this thread has made our choice a lot more now- as I essentially have no family this is the only thing from me she's getting in terms of names. My name isn't taken from a relative either, so I guess that puts a nice twist on it that we're not re-using a name for the sake of it but that if she wants to, she has something she could pass on to future generations from me Smile

DanyellasDonkey · 01/04/2016 17:40

I wouldn't - mainly because I don't like it when families continue the same names over and over again. I think it's nice to have something new and different.

Saying that, my middle name is my mother's maiden surname (which used to be quite a tradition here) and it's also a boy's christian name.

I spent my whole childhood having kids asking me why I had a boy's middle name and pretending the initial stood for something else Sad
