My great, great grandfathers name but is it too 'old fashioned'? What do you think?

DP and I also like Marc, Matthew, Joseph and Caleb.

I had an uncle called Malcolm who had a son with his first wife and named him Malcolm. He then divorced, remarried and had another son with his second wife and called him...........Malcolm

I know of a teenage Malcolm. He is a lovely boy, quite sporty. Goes by the shortening Mal and to my knowledge has never had any isdue with his name.

I think it's fine, particularly if it has a family link. The world would be pretty bland if we all chose the same names for our kids

But Cool Malcolms do exist! Malcolm Middleton from Arab Strap for example.

It's was a surname which became a first name. Sadly it just reminds me of an old man I'd use it as a middle name Eg. Sebastian Malcolm Jones would be fine

I like it. I know a (Scottish) one who goes by Malky. I prefer Matthew and Joseph though.

I used to think this was a boring dad name, but I've really warmed up to it in recent years compared to the horrors on the WTE baby name board

If you're in Scotland no one will even bat an eyelid. I know several. Young and old. Don't know about elsewhere, but I would go for it.

Malcolm is fine - Malcolm in the Middle or Dr Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park!

But Malachi is a good alternative and Mal is a very good nn.

Sounds like his brothers would be Trevor and Barry.
Then again, I don't like Arthur, Albert, Mabel and Cybill but they've all made a comeback, haven't they.

The only Malcolm I ever knew well was tall, good looking and very successful. Yes, it may seem old fashioned now, but TBH so many of the names that are fashionable now were seriously crusty old men's names a generation ago - Alfie, Arthur, etc.

Not to mention the girls' names - when I was very young the likes of Poppy, Violet, Florence and Lily only belonged to wizened old great-aunts with whiskery chins.
If you like it, go for it - it will very likely be fashionable in another 5 years.

Awww it can work, I know an awesome Malcolm so makes me smile when I hear it. He's Scottish though so perhaps that's why it works
