My eldest dd is called Maddison. Maddie as nn. I'd not met any before her and there are non that she knows. She's 14. I oly know of one other and that's a friend of my 7 year old dd.

I know someone who called their son Madison, but it seems more of a girl's name to me.

So I think of it as a boy name.

I can vouch for it - always been complimented on it being unusual & pretty, both Madison and Maddy. Then again I'm lucky to be an adult Madison, named before it really took off. If I wasn't already a Maddy, a future daughter would be Madelyn - beautiful beautiful name.

Cybill Shepherd in Moonlighting was a Maddie - Madelyn iirc. I like that spelling (and feel old as I've just asked dsd, 23, if I'm right and she has no idea what I'm talking about).

Madison is terribly dated and a bit tacky, sorry.

Madeleine is elegant and beautiful, however you spell it.

I'm just not keen on surname-names and place-names - I know it's not necessarily logical and there's no rationale for it particularly, but names I dislike tend to fall into that category. Unless they fall into other categories Wink

But I also think Madison is actually already a bit dated.

I find that people on Mumsnet tend to always like the original - they like the original Irish names, French names, etc.

In day to day life, people go for the most common/English alternative, in my area.

Well everyone on this thread has spelled it Madeleine (including my phone) so people will misspell it regularly

My niece is Madeleine and it always gets Madeline - so that isn't true. Madeline is the 'English Alternative'

I hate it. Will be very dated in 10 years. Madeleine is nice though, or Megan, Polly, Libby etc
