Last names as first names...

Hello all,

I'm trying to decide on boys names and really like the idea of using last names as first names.

So far i have shortlisted:

Jackson
Hunter
Carter
Avery
Baker
Smith
Paxton
Harrison
Mason

What do you think? Any other suggestions?

It's very en vogue where I am.

I know of a Hunter, Hudson, Carter, Carsen Blake and Mason.

Agree it's very common here in Scotland. My DH technically has 3 surnames as his first name is his mothers maiden name, his middle name is his grandmothers maiden name and then his actual surname. :)

They are included in this list as is my brothers name which is my grandmother's maiden name:

For what it's worth, whilst I really like it, I'd presume Avery was a girl (I know two). I've never heard it for a boy. However I do know both a male and female Piper so not too dissimilar.

I like Harrison and Mason. Not keen on surnames as first names usually though.

I agree Mclaren37 - one of mine has my mother's maiden name as his first name. It's a very traditional and common thing in Scotland. Probably where the American's got it from Wink

My first thought at Cameron is David.

Hunter might be different in the US but it makes me think of redneck twats grinning gormlessly over dead animals.

I went out with a Johnson Jones about 40 years ago. He had a brother called Dawson and I remember thinking how trendy and cool they were! Still like both those names

Avery is Fern's brother in Charlotte's Web so for me it's all wholesome farm boy, suntanned legs, dusty haybarns, rope swings, cotton candy, county fair associations. Grin

LOVE Scott as a middle name for a girl! My front runner for a girl atm is Frankie James Grin Miller is also super cute!

Having watch Making a Murderer i can honestly say that i have never made the connection! I actually stole the name from Greys Anatomy - Dr Jackson Avery.

Also really like Wilson but its my best friends last name so might be a little strange LOL

I'm the same,ds is Miller and dd's middle name is Scott!(first name was nearly Parker but frankie had in a few weeks before for her son.
If I had another it would be Hunter

Sounds American to me, but that's not necessarily a damning indictment. On the subject of indictments though Grin you may end up with a little law firm (that comment made me laugh - thinking of the firms I've worked at and wondering what MNers would think of a little Linklater, Norton or Cleary!).

Some are fine, but surnames as names are quite American sounding. Fine if you're American or want to sound American.

Not a fan of surnames as first names so I can't offer any other suggestions (although I do like both Sebastian and Arlo Grin). Re. Avery, the first thing that springs to mind for me is Steven Avery from Making a Murderer, can't believe nobody else has made that link. For me the name has pretty shocking connotations and it's the first thing I'd think of if I met a child called Avery...

Ah now I was going to say an unusual surname would help. I taught a boy called Baker once who had an African surname and always thought his name worked really well.

Ps. Our son has my maiden name as part of his name. It is a very traditional way to name your son, especially in Scotland. My middle name is also my mother's maiden name. I have a friend with maiden name Lucas who has named her boy Lucas. There's another one :)

Cameron is our current front runner, but I keep flip-flopping between that and a more traditional Scandi name (DH is Danish)

We have a DS due in a few weeks and like you quite like surnames as first names. Some that are on our shortlist that I don't think have been mentioned yet are

Flynn (not sure if this is a surname but sounds like it could be!)

Sure, all surnames were originally first names. Constructions like Robertson or O'Connell or MacGregor make it more apparent.
