HELP PLEASE!!! Edgar or Gustave?

our baby was born this week-end and hasn't a name yet! Help please! We are a French family living in London so need a name which is good in both countries. We loved Hector but realised the bullying meaning only recently and that put us off.... What do you think of Edgar or Gustave? Brother is Oscar, is Edgar too similar? Thanks a lot!

Hector is great. He could be Tor which is quite cool.

Go with Hector. My French friends with a boy called Hector also have a Gaspard FWIW.

Hector is awful imo - not only the meaning (to bully) but also the nickname Heck.

I really like Edgar - very cool and underused.

Gustave is ok but I think I prefer it as Gustaf.

May be ask an English person to pronounce both names for you out loud. That's how your DS will be called by the majority. Also important during the register time at school. My DS1 friend is Guillaume and he always needs to correct people how to pronounce his name.

Gustave is s super name- love it. Was my boy name but we ended up having a girl. Congratulations on your baby boy!

To hector is a verb. 'To talk and behave towards someone in a loud and unpleasantly forceful way, especially in order to get them to act or think as you want'.

I think I would go with Gustave, though I love Edgar and Hector.

Of the two you suggest, I prefer Edgar.

Have you considered Louis, Julien, Laurent, Jerome, which all work in both languages.

As pp said, Oscar and Edgar sound similar in french. Gustave is good and original, although I wouldn't know whether it had an 'e' on the end in english. And Gus is good as a nickname.
Oscar and Edwin would match the best though...

I'm also French/British and I like both these name choices, although I do think Edgard sounds very similar to Oscar in French.

What about Edmond ?

I prefer Edgar and don't think it sounds similar to Oscar. I'd never associate bullying with the name Hector though if that's your first choice and the only thing putting you off.

Hector is incredibly popular where I live. I don't like Edgar personally but do like Edward, Edmund and Eddison.
