Murray, thoughts?

After asking what people thought of Hamish the other day I'm now interested in thoughts/opinions on Murray? It's less common but a good strong Scottish name none the less....

I like Murray and prefer it to Hamish, which seems much more of a dogs name IMO. I am not usually keen on surnames as first names but there is a long tradition of this in Scotland - Fraser, Graham, Stewart etc, so they definitely seem like names in their own right. Also, Murray is not an incredibly common name in Scotland, nowhere near as common as eg Smith so do not see this as an issue!

It just makes me think of Murray from flight of the Concords, I'm not very keen on it as a name.

I don't mind Murray at all though I do prefer the Moray spelling. Probably not if you are in England.

I like James too and Jamie - are you both tennis fans?

have a trawl through the Scottish list you may come across a gem that you both love. I'm clearly biased but I do love Scottish names, they all seem so strong (girls and boys) and you just can't see anyone messing with folk called Murdo, Angus, Hamish, Gregor, Lorna, Shona, Aileen etc.

Just pulled up some Scottish Stats OneMagnum they are indeed interesting! I love James which is number 2 in Scotland for 2014 - lower here in England at 9. Don't know I could convince DH on it though he seems set on Murray atm!

Not keen on Murray. It seems to be a favourite name for dogs near me!

What about Keir? That's a cool name.

The Scottish stats are really fascinating, I could look at them all day! They go right down to 1 so you get every single names used. As the numbers are generally low because of the small population you get a really good idea about how likely it is that you will come across another and it's great for finding underused names. There are names on here that seem uber popular and you check the Scottish stats and there were 20 or something. Think I saw Josephine at about that number and it seems like loads are being named that on here. There were none of DS2 in the 2014 full stats.

We are currently living in England mawbroon but my husband is scottish. I thought 20 seemed a little low a figure Onemagnum!
I really like Gregor weegie but DH not so keen.

Or you can spell Murray - Moraidh

Are you in Scotland or elsewhere OP?

Threads about Scottish names tend to split I've noticed with the Scots not batting an eyelid at any of the traditional Scottish names and some comments from people elsewhere which genuinely leave me baffled!

eg Angus = posh. Not here it's not!!

dab That would just be in E&W - there were 105 in Scotland in 2014 - ranked 69.

If someone says Murray I just assume they're talking about Andy Murray.

My neighbour had a DS called Cameron though and it always takes me a second or two to realise she's not talking about David Cameron, so maybe ignore me. Grin

Had realised it was a surname as well but didn't realise it was that common in Scotland squoosh we aren't living there atm. It's certainly not commonly used as a first name, I think only 20 something in the whole of the UK in 2013. Hmmm keep dithering....

Hate it I'm afraid. Very dated. Love Hamish though. Also love several other Scottish names: Innes, Gregor, Fergus, Keir.

Murray is great. Slightly prefer Hamish but now Murray is growing on me.
