Name decided - to MIL's disgust.

So our daughter finally arrived 10 days late in the car park outside the hospital! Thank you to everyone on here who helped us to choose her name, which we love. She will be Sylvie and registered as Sylvia. We just ran it by my MIL who hates it and was very rude about the whole thing. Mainly because she had already decided we were calling her Martha and has been banging on about it for months. Trouble is we don't like it!
Now we need a middle name to go with Sylvia so we can officially announce her name and drive it home to MIL that she's not getting her way. Any help with this? Nothing too popular please and also we think one syllable names work best with Sylvia. Xx

Congratulations on the arrival of baby Sylvie. Another vote for Silvia Rose here, I think it's beautiful. Unless you have any family members you'd like to remember in her middle name. Both my DD's have an ancestors name as a middle name, one from my family and one from DH's. I think it's a really nice tradition, especially the one on my side that has been used for a few generations after someone who died young.

I suggest very firmly reminding MIL that she got to name her babies (assuming she did), and now it's your turn.

Congratulations.

My MIL announced she didn't like our youngest's name, I'd discharged myself after a terrible time in hospital and just got home, DH made us all a cuppa and for some reason he asked her what did she think of the name - and she gave her honest answer! I mean who the fuck actually does that?! Hmm

Are all lovely middle names to go with the fab name you've chosen Wink

Shouldn't of even ran it past the MiL. You will make her feel like she has a say when she doesn't.

Congratulations Flowers

It's really strange when mothers make decisions like that: did she think that if she told everyone that DD was Martha you would just go along with it? It's like my DM who told everyone that DC2 was my last child, and said "we'd decided". Not only had DH and I not decided anything of the sort, if we had we wouldn't have discussed it with DM and probably wouldn't even have told her. She was very off when I got pregnant with DC3 and refused to babysit when I went into labour, it was incredibly childish.

marshmallowpies · 18/02/2016 17:10

Love Sylvia Jane or Beth or Amy - all the other 1 syllable names are so popular as middle names now, though, that I wouldn't choose May, Rose or Grace, though they are all lovely.

Pushing out the boat to 2 syllable names, how about Sylvia Mary or Sylvia Frances or Sylvia Lauren?

aprilanne · 18/02/2016 17:09

what a lovely name

Kr1stina · 18/02/2016 17:09

BTW my friend gave birth in the car on the way to the hospital . The birth certificate actually says place of birth as " in car, on X road , town name " .

Her MIL complained that it wasn't a very naice area

gleekster · 18/02/2016 17:08

If you are going to call her Sylvie why are you bothering with "Sylvia?"

I used to work with a Sylvie and always thought it was a lovely name. I think her father was Danish.

I think you have to use a middle name MIL won't like too or she will might start calling DD by her middle name - seen that on mumsnet a few times Angry

Agree with PP that Sylvie Grace is nice.

Congratulations on her (rather exciting) arrival. Flowers

I like Joy as a middle name.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 18/02/2016 17:07

Joy? I really liked the idea of Joy for my second daughter - her first name has 3 syllables and I love the meaning of the name Joy but hubby wasn't so keen.

Sylvia Joy would work nicely, or I agree Rose is beautiful.

I really liked Sylvia/ie too but hubby preferred the names we chose in the end.

Kr1stina · 18/02/2016 17:06

Any other names that MIL dislikes ?

More seriously, what about a name from your side of the family ?

nellyflora · 18/02/2016 17:06

Sylvia
Rose
Jane
Wren
Anne
Flur
Kate

My MIL hates my DD name and even told all of her side of the family the baby was called a nickname of the name 😡 We even got a silver box with the nickname on! And the distant relatives were really embarrassed when they relised they said hello kitty and we said meet Katherine ( not the real name) I can't bring myself to use the nickname now because of mil. Sylvia/ sylvie is lovely! X

I love Jane in particular for some reason! Congrats on your new arrival :)

MitzyLeFrouf · 18/02/2016 17:06

Congratulations, such a gorgeous name. MIL will get over it and a few months be telling everyone she loves the name and it was her idea Wink

And car park birth! Eeek!

I like Sylvie Mae or May. Sounds beautiful.
Congratulations and ignore MIL. Not her choice to make. She's being very rude to criticise your name choice.
