So our daughter finally arrived 10 days late in the car park outside the hospital! Thank you to everyone on here who helped us to choose her name, which we love. She will be Sylvie and registered as Sylvia. We just ran it by my MIL who hates it and was very rude about the whole thing. Mainly because she had already decided we were calling her Martha and has been banging on about it for months. Trouble is we don't like it!
Now we need a middle name to go with Sylvia so we can officially announce her name and drive it home to MIL that she's not getting her way. Any help with this? Nothing too popular please and also we think one syllable names work best with Sylvia. Xx

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

The heaven such grace did lend her

Sylvia Grace is my vote.

MissBattleaxe · 18/02/2016 17:45

Since Sylvie means "of the woods" how about something pastoral such as Sylvia Laurel or Sylvia Rowan?

I adore Sylvia/Sylvie, congratulations!

The name really works with some of the combos already suggested, especially Mae, Grace, and Wren IMO. Would also like to put forward: Lynne, Pearl, and Dawn, and maybe Jo/Joy/Joyce, depending upon surname.

MIL will get used to whatever name you pick, she'll have to; she has already had her turn after all. And still, if she's desperate to name someone/thing Martha, she's perfectly free to get (more?) cats/fish/(insert pet here).

Dixiechickonhols · 18/02/2016 17:42

My DD has Joy as amiddle name, good name and makes a change from often used Grace/May.

If you are calling her Sylvie then why not register her as that. Can just see it being irritating for your DD when Sylvie is as 'proper' a name as Sylvia. Both are pretty names.

writingonthewall · 18/02/2016 17:41

Why not register her with the name you are going to use? Sylvie is a lovely name!

MitzyLeFrouf · 18/02/2016 17:36

'Whereas my great auntie sylvia is a nutter.'

I don't know why but that made me snort Grin

whatevva · 18/02/2016 17:36

Who Is Silvia?

Who is Silvia? what is she,
That all our swains commend her?
Holy, fair, and wise is she;
The heaven such grace did lend her,
That she might admirèd be.

Is she kind as she is fair?
For beauty lives with kindness.
Love doth to her eyes repair,
To help him of his blindness,
And, being helped, inhabits there.

Then to Silvia let us sing,
That Silvia is excelling;
She excels each mortal thing
Upon the dull earth dwelling:
To her let us garlands bring.

Something Shakespearean?

Or Sylvia Grace sounds quite woodland nymph (always liked Sylvian Smile)

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 18/02/2016 17:34

I love the name you have chosen. Congratulations!

I like Sylvia Jean.

liquidrevolution · 18/02/2016 17:32

Joy is a gorgeous middle name to go with Sylvia. Love the spelling Sylvie over Sylvia but I also knew a girl called Sylvie and she was lovely. Whereas my great auntie sylvia is a nutter.

Although I logged on to recommend Tarmac as a middle name, due to the place of her delivery Wink.

Your MIL is clearly nuts and hopefully it will all die down soon. Just make sure you contact everyone personally, even distant relatives to make sure they know her reall name.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 18/02/2016 17:31

Oh forgot to say congratulations. Welcome to our world baby Sylvie GrinFlowers.

CoodleMoodle · 18/02/2016 17:30

Definitely Sylvia Rose. Beautiful name, congrats OP!

DartmoorDoughnut · 18/02/2016 17:29

Red?! Def!

DartmoorDoughnut · 18/02/2016 17:29

Congratulations! Red don't use Martha as a middle name else your MIL will call her that!

Love Sylvie Rose

ChristmasEvePJs · 18/02/2016 17:29

My aunt is called Sylvia Rose and she is every bit as lovely as her name. Congratulations.

spillyobeans · 18/02/2016 17:28

'MIL complained it wasn't a very naice area' psml!

My MIL asked why I'd not named my ds after my (36 years dead) father. Before I could answer she rushed on with - 'what was his name again?'
I told her. 'Oh, now I see why' she said. Nasty cow.
To cap it all, when I told my mother the name she said: 'and what was your second choice?' Pah.

OP, congrats. Name your baby as you wish.

Sylvie is luffly, as is Sylvia. I like Rose or May for a middle name but with such a pretty first name you cant go wrong really (unless your MIL is in town).

SatsukiKusakabe · 18/02/2016 17:26

I don't think they actually want an alternative to Martha, handsoffgary, it was pushed on them.

I love Sylvia Joy and Sylvia Kate from other's suggestions.

WitchWay · 18/02/2016 17:26

Sylvia Jane
Sylvia Beth
Sylvia Kate

needs to be one syllable I think

Why Martha??

Hygge · 18/02/2016 17:25

Sylvie Elizabeth / Sylvia Elizabeth both flow well I think.

Ignore MIL, stick with the name you love.

HandsoffGary · 18/02/2016 17:21

oh and congratulations!!!! enjoy the snuggles

Sophronia · 18/02/2016 17:20

Sylvia Blythe

Sylvia Lark

Sylvia Joy

Sylvia Tess

HandsoffGary · 18/02/2016 17:20

Marte is an alternative to Martha, how about Sylvia Marte?

Goingtobeawesome · 18/02/2016 17:20

If she will be known as Sylvie why isn't that going on the birth certificate? It's not like known as Tommy but given Thomas for some ridiculous future barrister reason.
