Help with welsh baby names!

Dh's family are welsh, and we're keen to use a welsh name for our baby.

The two we current like the best are Dylan for a boy and Ffion Gwyneth for a girl. Can anyone please suggest other welsh names for us to consider?

I'm not welsh at all, but a bit concerned that Dylan and Ffion are lovely names but a bit too popular - though that might not matter living in England. I was the most popular girls name for the year I was born and really want to avoid that for my baby!

It should be Tristan, not Tristian (which sounds like a mash-up of Tristan and Christian).

Or you could spell it Trystan - no, that's not a youneek spelling, it's the traditional Welsh version of the name, the first syllable being pronounced like the English word 'trust'.

What about Megan for a girl. As you probably know. That's a Welsh name and certainly easy to pronounce and very pretty.

Right, we're having a boy. This narrows down the search. DH is useless at suggesting names, just vetos the ones I say I like.

From this thread my favourites are (and huge thanks for the suggestions)

  • Bryn (love this one so much I've considered sneaking to the register office after baby is born and sticking it on the birth certificate without DH knowing. DH is adamant we can't use it because of Twin Town)
  • Dylan (DH not vetoed, but never been convinced. My mum hates it. I should stop telling her things)
  • Tomos (Nice, but I'm not sure it's my baby's name)
  • Tristian (I really like, but DH thinks it's a bit posh. Makes me think of the character from All Creatures Great and Small, who was also Dr Who).
  • Gruffydd/Griff (I like Griff)
  • Dorien (not sure how welsh this is - but there is a welsh actor called this)

The only non-welsh name I've been toying with is Samuel, just on the off chance baby doesn't look like DHs side of the family at all, and is a little mini-me. Might use it as a middle name.

DH has also started being a pain with surnames. We've alway said baby will be technically double barrelled, but use dh's surname on a daily basis. DH has now decided that he thinks double barrelling is ridiculous and he'd rather baby had just my name than both. I'm hoping he'll change his mind when he comes to register Bryn Stains, as I'd like baby to have both names. Offered to put his Surname as a middle name instead of double barrelling but doesn't like that.

It's funny as he's normally so decisive, but I think he's a bit freaked out at the responsibility of naming a new human, which is why he doesn't like any of the names I suggest.

He has middle name Iwan

My daughter is called Meredith and if she was a boy she would of been Geraint.

We have a DD called Celyn (Welsh for holly, pronounced kell-in). Lots of compliments on it :)

When we have DC2, if it's a boy his middle name will be Idris. Absolute favourite Welsh boys name!

Also love Taran, Deio, Dewi, Dylan, Macsen, Morgan, Iwan, Teilo, Huw and Tomos for boys.

Cadi, Cerian, Mabli, Haf, Seren, Angharad, Siriol, Llio, Llinos, Delyth, Alaw, Awel, Deryn, Mari and Manon for girls.

We lived in England for the first 3 years after having DS. He has a Welsh name that is difficult to read but once people were told correct pronunciation they always got it right. There were a few in his nursery with 'complicated' Welsh names so it's not that uncommon. I also know a 5 year old Gruffudd in London.

OP - I think any names you are having to check pronounciation of are best avoided, as you can guarantee other non-Welsh people will be unsure too.

Elin is a good one if you want easy to pronounce and spell outside of Wales.

I'm Welsh, living in England, and always amazed at how many Welsh names bemuse people here. Names I think are fairly straightforward like Sian, Ceri and Gethin all cause confusion - not sure why!

Will be interested to follow this thread as I face a similar dilemma. Love Welsh names but they could be a lot of hassle here!

DS has the middle name Bryn. He's had a few Uncle Bryn jibes.

I think Dilys is a bit too Fireman Sam personally. And I'm not keen on the Welsh pronunciation of Dylan.

I like Bryn and Taran (pronounced Tar-an) for boys - I knew an english Bryn from school who was lovely and totally suited his name.

For girls i like Carys and love Eilonwy (pronounced Eye-lan-we)

We are in England and have a Ieuan (yi-yan).
I love his name and there isn't another one (that I've found) around here. People always comment what a fab name, although the spelling and pronunciation usually cause some confusion!
