Another shout out for Jemma / Gemma.

Never met a Jemma, but Kidd and Redgrave spring to mind. Gemma was the name of Dante's wife. I'm sure she wasn't common Grin

I think I prefer Emma, but it's funny what people consider to be "chav". Jemma Kidd, Jemma Redgrave etc..are they chavs?!

I'm an Emma and from the 80s and I went to school with loads of Emma's and Gemma's. Obviously I'd pick Emma out of solidarity but I really wanted to be a Jade. Hope that's helped.

I don't know of any young Sarahs or Emmas, so either would be quite a refreshing and unusual name for the younger generation IMHO.

I'd go for Jemma/Gemma (if pushed).

Ooh this is quite a snobby thread! I like Jemma, know a couple of quite posh Gemmas too, and it doesn't seem to have held Jemma, Marchioness of Douro, nee Kidd, back in life. I think it's quite refreshing after so many Lilies and Ellas and Roses, pretty though they are.

Emma is a lovely, classy, classic name. It's not boring and it's a million times better than any of the current faddy cutesy names that will date really quickly/badly (and that might be great for a 6 week old but aren't so great when they're 16/26/36 etc.).

I'm not called Emma by the way so no vested interest!

There's just a bit more to Jemma/Gemma imo.

Jemma is actually a very well known spelling... Back in the 1990s, Gemma was around 50 and Jemma was around 120... Not a lot in it, really... I feel like it's a bit like Eleanor/Elinor, Elliot/Elliott, etc.

Emma is lovely but v popular- 3 in one class in our school. So they're all known as Emma initial. Jemma is just a misspelling of Gemma isn't it?
