Hello lovely mumsnetters,

Please help us by voting for your favourite! DS1 is due this month and DH and I can't choose between these four names. We'll probably go with the majority vote as we just can't separate them. Thank you!!! Smile

Thomas Henry W......
Matthew Joseph W......
Alexander James W......
Joseph Matthew W......

I like Thomas James over Thomas Henry Grin

nextusername · 13/01/2016 11:14

Of those two I'd pick Thomas/Tom.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 13/01/2016 10:30

Ooh glad I've made a difference and hopefully helped Smile

iloveMrBloom · 13/01/2016 10:26

Good point about the shortenings/nicknames, thanks!

I like Tom, but as Thomas is only two syllables I'll probably refer to him by his full name most of the time. If he becomes Tom later then that's fine.

I can't see Matt suiting a baby so I'd probably go for Matty or Huey when he's small, if I shorten at all - it's a long name written down but again only two syllables. I don't mind him becoming Matt later.

The other two are trickier because I'm not massively keen on Alex or Joe. I knew a very wet Alex as a child which has put me off! I'm not that keen on any other obvious nicknames - that might rule Alexander out then. I LOVE the full name but realistically it is a bit of a mouthful for daily use.

Joseph would probably be Joey as a baby/child but guess he'd become Joe later which I don't really like.

Guess it's between Thomas and Matthew then!!

Alexander, definitely. But am biased as I have a female version Smile

Do think about the shortenings, though, in case there are any that you hate. You do get some say over it (for example, we always call DD by one shortening and in 4 years no one has ever shortened it to anything else) but obviously when they go to school that might well change.

They are all great names though.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 13/01/2016 10:11

To be honest OP, you can't go wrong with any of them, they are all absolutely fine. Maybe think if you like the shortened versions as much - Alex, Joe, Tom, Matt, which may swing it for you. You may not shorten but their school friends probably will.

JenniferAnistonsHair · 13/01/2016 06:51

I'd go for Joseph

iloveMrBloom · 12/01/2016 22:32

Thank you everyone! Smile

So on a quick count, Alexander is the clear winner - followed by Thomas then Matthew then Joseph.

Matthew was a late entry to the short list (MIL suggestion). I hadn't considered it before but it has really grown on me. Love that it means 'gift of God' too.

My daughter has a biblical name so I'd like to continue that trend ideally.

Hmm, it's still so hard to decide! I think we'll end up seeing what he looks like and hopefully he'll arrive looking like one of these names!!

Any more votes??

Joseph - stunning!!!

TheDaerieQueene · 12/01/2016 21:09

Just checked ONS list - it's not that underused at #49 (but Thomas and Joseph are top 20, and Alexander #22). They're all popular for a reason!

TheDaerieQueene · 12/01/2016 21:07

They're all lovely - beautiful classic names and combinations. I feel like Matthew is the most underused if that's a consideration (I met a baby Matthew today and thought how nice it was to hear the name on a baby) but you couldn't go wrong with any of them.

Alex James makes me think of Blur/ Chipping Norton set cheesemaking but perhaps I am showing my age...

Shadow1986 · 12/01/2016 21:03

Alexander James or Thomas Henry!

Biscuitsneeded · 12/01/2016 21:00

Thomas Henry (although I love Thomas Joseph too!)

Unoriginalusername123 · 12/01/2016 20:59

All fabulous! My vote goes to Matthew Joseph though as I think Matthew is slightly more underused than the other first name choices. You really can't go wrong with any of the four though. Congrats!

cecilelliott · 12/01/2016 20:53

Alexander James followed by Matthew

Sophronia · 12/01/2016 14:13

Thomas Henry or Matthew Joseph

Pagetta · 12/01/2016 13:58

Alexander james

SquirrelledAway · 12/01/2016 10:36

Thomas Henry.

Then he can be a Thomas, a Tom, a Henry or a Harry.

nextusername · 12/01/2016 10:26

Alexander James or Joseph Matthew (or if you can mix them up then Alexander Joseph or Joseph Alexander)

tuilamum · 12/01/2016 10:25

Definitely Alexander James
(Although I do agree with Wishful in that Henry James is lovely too)

Wishful80sMontage · 12/01/2016 09:55

If its out if those names in that order then
Thomas Henry
But if you can mix them up then Henry James or James Henry are both beautiful

Looserella · 12/01/2016 09:50

Alexander James

MrsCaecilius · 12/01/2016 09:22

Alexander James, without a doubt!

pleasegotowork · 12/01/2016 08:56

All lovely but my vote is

Thomas Henry

CakeRattleandRoll · 12/01/2016 08:54

Matthew Joseph
