Persephone, ophelia,Titania or Andromeda

Just musing but which one do you prefer.

Persephone
ophelia
Titania
Andromeda

Persephone would be shortened to Percy.

Andromeda would be shortened to Andi.

Titania would be shortened to Titty.

Ophelia would probably be shortened to Ophie, like Sophie but without the S.

It depends on your background and where you live. Those names would get the kid torn to pieces up here but somewhere more, shall we say, posher they would fit in well. Personally I prefer Ophelia, but then again that's because I felt sorry for Hamlet's Ophelia.

My word, they'd be torn to shreds in Yorkshire!! I now live in Scotland and unless they were schooled at Fettes or Gordonstoun then they'd be torn to shreds here too!!!

Persephone seems perfectly usable to me and Sephy is a pretty nickname, whilst Percy would suit a fun teenager too. I really like the sound of Ophelia but would probably avoid as the associations with the character are better known than with the others... Andromeda seems like a step too far, and Titania really does invite cruel teenage nicknames regardless of school context.

I love Persephone - both the full name and the nickname Sephy. Not keen on Percy, though!

I also like Andromeda, but then I have a soft spot for names along that theme. I'm fond of Cassiopeia, too.

Titania and Ophelia are nice in isolation but I wouldn't use either because of the potential for jokes and teasing, as others have already said.

Persephone would be shortened to Percy in our house.

I like Persephone the best, but the spelling/pronunciation thing is tricky.
Andromeda sounds like a space shuttle.
Titania would be abbreviated to Tit, which won't be good (I went to school with a Titus, and his mates all called him Tit for years)
Ophelia is pretty, but is too much like I-feel-ya (there is a joke that ends 'Ophelia bits', don't think it is funny but nevertheless....)

Orphelia but your kid better have a tough skin, there'll be a lot of teasing. Assuming you're not musing middle names and it's Christian names, why not go for something less conspicuous and a little more humane?

It is the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death this year, so perhaps there might be a revival of Shakespearean names.

In which case you might find a couple more Titanias in the reception class in four years' time...

My DD has a name along those lines....

Go with what you like - you're going to be using it everyday. Try shouting it a couple of times make sure you're surname isn't too jarring I quite like Ophelia x

I like Ophelia as a name, but not the connotations, and Titania, but the nickname might be tricky.
Also like Silvia, and Diana. It might be time for a Diana revival.

Sorry sock, just a gut reaction and may well be quite odd.
I think it is possibly regional as well- I live on the west coast of Scotland but may have a very different view if I lived in the south east of England for example.

It's not the name that's pretending to be anything it is potentially the parents choosing them. I don't know maybe if you were upperclass it might sound ok but otherwise I would feel sorry for the child and think the parent was a bit of a twat.
