Sasha (for a girl)

Hi there. I'm expecting DD2 in a couple of months and have always loved the name Sasha, but suddenly experiencing last minute anxiety over it! DH vetoed it for DD1, but has come round to it just as I'm wobbling. I'm not too worried about the fact that in other European countries it tends to be a boys name - it can go either way here, and having checked last year's baby names on ONS, it's definitely more of a girls name than a boys name in the UK. I think it's such a pretty name but I'm getting really dud responses from friends and family with it! Others I like are Saskia, Amy, Franscesca, Florence and Flora.

Well, its my name and I like it and others seem to, not that people would tell me if they didn't.

I think in this country its seen as more of a female name.

Rosaaa · 26/12/2015 20:01

It's used for both genders, but I personally only know girls with this name. As others said, it's also a nickname for Alexandra.

CherryPits · 25/12/2015 22:08

I have met many Sashas. All female, from small kids through to mums in their 40s.

Never met a male one yet.

Obviously hanging out with the wrong crowd.

where's my tiara?

SquirmOfEels · 25/12/2015 18:44

Yes, it's exactly like Charlie is either Charles or Charlotte, with the use for boys being considerably more frequent.

So it's not wrong on a girl, but it's principally a boy's nn, and (depending on the ethnic mix in your area) very much in use for boys. Round here (primary and secondary) there are between one and four boys per year group called Sasha and no girls.

Zhabr · 25/12/2015 16:25

Sasha is the name for both sexes (Aleksandr/Aleksandra). In Russia there are several names like that- Zhenya ( Evgenyi/ Evgenya), or Valya (Valentin/Valentina).

CherryPits · 25/12/2015 14:40

Its also a nickname for Alexandra

Stollenlover · 24/12/2015 13:15

I think Boy, traditionally a nickname for Alexander.

Fugghetaboutit · 24/12/2015 10:25

I find it quite harsh, not sure why.

Prefer Saskia or Saffron

tuilamum · 24/12/2015 10:08

My stepdads sister is called Sasha and I've always liked the name for both sexes. I do like Saskia too though

cecilelliott · 23/12/2015 20:39

Love this!

missboots · 23/12/2015 08:03

Thanks everyone - feeling much more positive about it now. Think it may be a choice between the three when she arrives!

I love it! It was on my list but DH didn't like it. I also definitely think of it as a girls name, as a boy's name it's there with Lindsay for me Wink

Nospringflower · 21/12/2015 23:03

I love Sasha for a girl.

Essexgirlupnorth · 21/12/2015 22:59

The only Sasha I know is female. I also know a Sancha

miniswin · 21/12/2015 22:04

The most glamorous, gorgeous girl I know is called Sacha. Do it!

hawaiibaby · 21/12/2015 21:50

I think it's gorgeous. Wobbles are normal but you've loved it for so long so go for it!

quitecrunchy · 21/12/2015 21:47

I'd probably spell as Sacha for a girl but probs just because I've only known 1 female with the name and she spells it that way but have met a few male Sashas

IHeartKingThistle · 21/12/2015 21:41

I love it and I think it's fine for a girl. Also love Saskia.

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 21/12/2015 21:40

I think of boys. Like calling a girl Derek. However, that's because I only know boy Sashas. In some countries like Germany I think, you are not allowed to call girls Sasha.

DS would have been Sacha had it been my choice. Fab name. For a boy!

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 21/12/2015 21:33

Not a horrible name, but certainly not to my taste. The Sasha I know is lovely

Movingonmymind · 21/12/2015 21:07

Lovely

Cheesypop · 21/12/2015 21:03

This is on our long list as I love it, although am slightly concerned about the unisex thing. I just love the sound of it though and think it is really feminine sounding!

Saskia and Francesca are also gorgeous. Any of the three would be really nice.

3luckystars · 21/12/2015 19:56

One of my best friends is called Sasha and she is the funniest, coolest, nicest girl ever so of course I love it! I don't know any others, its unusual without being weird. She also has a great job and is really respected, so its a feminine but strong.
Go for it! Its a great name.

GoldPlatedBacon · 21/12/2015 19:49

I love Saskia and Francesca - two of my most favourite names. There is a baby girl Sasha at my baby group. They dithered over the unisex issue but decided to go for it anyway.

CherryPits · 21/12/2015 19:00

Sasha or Sascha is not American. Its Russian and short for Alexandra or Alexander.

Its a beautiful name. I would have used it if it hadn't along with our last name, turned into a tongue twister.
