Parents hate baby name (Susie)

After a week of um/ah OH and I finally decided to call DD2 Susie Florence.

On telling my folks my dad asked - where did that come from?!? Is it your final decision? My mum said straight out she doesn't like it and that she'll call the baby Flo (I only picked Florence after her constant pestering! I actually prefer Mia or Rose as a middle name)...

Anyway they both want me to change my mind and I'm really upset. Is it such an awful name?!? And what should I do now - OH is v annoyed at the thought of changing it, he loves it and thinks they're being mean to me! And we've found it hard to agree. Alice has been a contender and I know my parents would prefer it but I couldn't get the 'who the is Alice' song out of my head!

Am up feeding not just fretting, but this is really on my mind - any advice?!?

So glad I'm not the only person who likes the name Susie - thanks for replying. And thx for the Susie book recommendation!

I can completely imagine living the scenarios Homebird8 and NannyPhlegm describe - thanks for the helpful warning!

And sunshine, cinnamon, I think you're spot on with your thoughts on control and apologies - they really ring true... Time to stand firm!

My parents misheard dh on the phone and thought their first pfb granddaughter was called Harrison. Was funny watching them manfully pretending they liked it before we all realised the mix up! (Name is nothing like that a very recognisable quite but not mega popular girls name)

Champagneformyrealfriends · 20/12/2015 21:40

I love Susie! I'm biased though - I'm a Suzi Grin

StDogolphin · 20/12/2015 20:36

I have been saying for years that Susan is due a massive come back! I love Susan Rose. You must chose the names you love though, you will regret it if you don't. Congratulations!

Sleepingtom · 20/12/2015 20:28

LOVE the name Susie and almost called DS2 it (before I knew he was a he) (and numbertaker this was inspired purely by the Mr & Mrs Bunn story!)

Beautiful name. Love Susie Rose. Susie Florence is nice too but please call your baby the name you love. I settled for my second choice and it took me a LONG time to come to terms with it.

Please also ignore your mother. Shockingly rude (and wrong imo!) X

Congratulations. Susie is a beautiful name it's the name I would choose for myself. I personally would go with Susanna(h) on the BC as I'm quite traditional with names.

You need to get this book, and change your name to Mrs Bunn!

I think Susie is a lovely name. I'd change the middle name to one of your preferred ones too.

OTiTO · 19/12/2015 00:31

Wow, how rude are your parents. It's never ok to comment on someone's baby name choice ONCE the baby has been named!

It's a really nice name.

AvaCrowder · 19/12/2015 00:13

I think I'm inclined to tell my dc that I don't like their names, just so I can be like Chelsea's mum, and say well I do now.

TheMightyMing · 18/12/2015 23:25

Susie is absolutely gorgeous and unusual these days, so even better xx

Sansfards · 18/12/2015 23:19

They've had their chance to name a daughter, it's your turn now. Choose exactly what you want and tell them not to be so bloody rude!

PetiteBateau · 18/12/2015 23:10

Fuck what your Mum wants, this is YOUR baby. Susie Rose is lovely

LittleBearPad · 18/12/2015 22:54

Susie is lovely. Go for it and choose whatever middle name you actually like.

sod 'em

Devora · 18/12/2015 22:54

I'm over 50 and I think Susie is a lovely name Smile

M48294Y · 18/12/2015 22:46

One of my relatives has given her dd the most awful name which gives me the cringe as I write or say it. However, I wouldn't dream of commenting on it negatively to her.

Your parents sound like hard work op - have they no idea about boundaries with other adults?

SpecialistSnowflake · 18/12/2015 22:43

Reconsider using her choice of middle name if she's just going to walk all over you and use that instead. Pick two names that YOU both love - that's you and your DH, not your DM!

SwedishEdith · 18/12/2015 22:40

And Chelsea's mum is a star.

SwedishEdith · 18/12/2015 22:39

Susie is great - love it. I think she'll end up a Suze rather than a Sue.

annandale · 18/12/2015 22:21

I do remember the stunned look on my mother's face when we told her ds's name - it only lasted a third of a second but it was definitely there Grin She admits it was a name that would have been outlandish to her in her babynaming days so it did take a moment or two to adjust. However, as a mature adult, and crucially, not the parent of ds, she never said anything and of course just loves her gs who IS his name to her.

I am sort of looking forward to hearing my first grandchild's name, if any. Probably something like Alienne or Roger.

AvaCrowder · 18/12/2015 21:55

Firstly I like the name Susie, and it seems the only issue with the middle name is that your mum would call her by it, so I'd be tempted to give her whatever middle name you like, but tell your mum it's slit, or Billy, so she can't.

Chelsea your mum sounds so nice, with the I like it now comment, thank you for sharing that.

DramaAlpaca · 18/12/2015 21:48

Haven't read the thread, but I only have one piece of advice: call your child what you want and to hell with anyone else's opinions.

grumpysquash2 · 18/12/2015 19:02

When I was pg with DS1, I fully intended to call him Noah. My Mum hated it, kept going on and on about how he would be given Noah's Ark things all the time, how people would laugh at it etc. etc.
In the end I gave him the planned middle name and picked another.

Fast forward 4 years and pg with DS2, my mum said 'how about Noah? That's a lovely name' Grrrr.

DS2 wasn't Noah either.

nilbyname · 18/12/2015 18:49

Well I think your mil was very rude! It's just not on to comment on names!

I think Susie is a great name, not that it matters, so stay with the name you love!

HeteronormativeHaybales · 18/12/2015 18:44

Tbh, I think Florence goes better with Susie than with Mia or Rose (both of which, I'm afraid, will date her - Rose in particular is the Louise of our day). And I would be thinking very seriously of Susan or Susanna for the birth cert, so she has a formal, grown-up alternative.

(not RAllTFT) There's a Susie song as well - don't know if kids still sing it in playgrounds these days...
