Strong girls names?

Girls names that aren't too girly? Pretty is OK, can't have any names ending in 'a' or 'er' sounds as odd with surname. Surname is quite dull, so name shouldn't be too boring!

Really like Ada and Ramona but doesn't work because of above. Also like Rosalind (names of famous women scientists go down well). And it may just be pregnancy hormones, but I've been wondering about Arrietty (with a plainer middle name) because the girl character in The Borrowers is so fierce and independent.

Names/name choices are a weird thing. For instance if you name your child Willow, is she then predestined not to be short and lumpen? Or have the parents subconsciously (or consciously) picked a name that suits the expectation that the child will be "willow like"?

Or is it more that if you choose a name with different shortenings the one used is a reflection of the child's character e.g. Rosalind could have it unshortened which is a name with gravitas but could equally be Rosie or Lindy for a amore fluffy name or Rosa for something inbetween.

Personal taste probably has the biggest influence though :)

I'm not sure what the criteria are now that I think about it! Maybe it's more personal associations (in which case asking is pointless, oh well!) but I know that 'Kaylee' for example is on the list of names I like, because of Firefly, but it doesn't seem like a strong name, even though the character is a strong female character. Maybe it is about the amount of feminine, but then feminine can be strong too!

Yep, I have no clue the criteria!

Arrianne or Evangeline were on our list for DC3, we wanted some thing feminine but not girly after two ds we didn't go with either of these in the end, naming girls is much harder than boys

I know you said no names ending in "a", but-
Stella (as in Rimmington, can't get cooler than a lady spy)
Jessica (as in Ennis-Hill)
Lizzie (as in Armitstead, shortlisted for SPOTY)

How about Aderyn? It means 'bird' in Welsh.

I'd guess it means not frilly and girly names (such as Poppy and Rosie and Emily?) though clearly a strong woman can be called anything. personally, I'm not a fan of the frilly and girly either but I don't know if i'd necessarily call other names strong, not sure what the adjective should be tbh.

Anyway, my favourite girls name at the moment is probably Lorna
