scottish girls names. maybe islands

Don't think my title makes sense.

Looking fir a girls name and wondered re Scottish Islands

Anyone think of anything . I know the usual
Islay iona rona etc

Never heard Eilidh pronounced any other way than Ay-lee. I'm Scottish, have lived all over Scotland, and am also in the North - East, where I have taught many of them/have friends called Eilidh.

Love Vaila, it's very pretty.

This thread is timely for me as started thinking about girls' names today for DD2 who is due next year. I was born and brought up very close to some of the aforementioned names and kind of decided today to use a local place name as a middle name. It's not at all girly but feels right to use it anyhow

NE Scotland here and Eilidh is pronounced as Ay-lay, not Ay-lee. There are a few girls with the spelling Ailie as their parents obviously don't want them having to spend their time explaining how their name is spelled

Also you don't pronounce the 'lau' at the end of Isla. You just say it like Isla.

Aw, I thought I was going to be the only one suggesting Vaila, it's such a tiny island in the Shetland that most people haven't heard of it. I only know of it because it's the name of my parents' house!

DD was very nearly Eiilidh, but we felt she'd have a lifetime of spelling her name to others.

Eilidh is the Scottish Gaelic version of Helen. It's quite popular - in top 20 in Scotland in 2014 www.nrscotland.gov.uk/filesstatistics/popular-forenames/2014/babiesnames-2014-t5.pdf

The people I know with that name say something in between 'Ayl-ih' and 'Ayl-ee', in other words a slightly shorter vowel sound at the end than (for example) 'Maisie'.

Eilidh is usually aylee at least it is in the north west and the central belt, I've never heard it pronounced as aylay.

I wouldn't go with Kerrera, I've never heard anyone that's not from nearby pronounce that right.

It's not Squoosh. I know several (live in NE Scotland & lived in Scotland my whole life). Eilidh is definitely Ail-ay when pronounced in Scotland, I've never heard it pronounced any other way

I myself would go for Kilda, where was a saint, or Maree. Personally I think Skye overused like the other ones you mention, so didn't include it above, and think Arran, Bute, Mull, Uist, Lewis and Harris more suitable for boys.

Lots of lovely ones, and the ones above are really ( other than Ishbel which someone will tell me is the genitive in the Gaelic but they should gave told my friend's west coast parents that then ) are lowland, or non Gaelic. Lovely Gaelic ones too

I always liked Paisley as a name but think I live a bit close to it to ever use it. Also like Iona and Rona.
