My dad LOVES this name. I don't mind it but not sure on it as a name.

Nice? Awful? Politically incorrect??

Siblings would be molly and Connor

Hilariously ridiculous. Particularly when the siblings have popular, normal names.
It's a great name for a boat, dog or pony though. But not a human.

MrsCaecilius · 08/12/2015 11:44

Lovely name for a dog/pony, dreadful for a child. Not far off calling the kid golliwog (to a lot of people) and leaving them open to a lot of potential hassle in a few years. Just don't!

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 08/12/2015 10:58

...and then appropriating it.

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 08/12/2015 10:57

Well it has overtones of taking a whole (oppressed, often despised and discriminated against) people and culture and boiling it down to an exotic romanticised image South

Calling a child Gypsy politically incorrect that should say

SouthYarraYobbo · 08/12/2015 10:54

How is calling a child un-pc Confused.

If you like it, use it. I know one Gypsy and l was a bit Hmm about it at first but it suits her now.

squoosh · 08/12/2015 10:52

Uh, massively politically incorrect!

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 08/12/2015 10:47

It is pretty OP but I think Star is right.

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 08/12/2015 10:46

What is the Chalet school? is it some sort of mnet imaginary school?

It might as well be what you said, though Smile

PeasOnEarth · 08/12/2015 10:43

Not keen. Delivered one once, back in my maternity days - was glad of my professional "oh how lovely" responses. Love your other DC names, and there are so many beautiful Irish/Celtic girls names you could use.

Madbengalmum · 08/12/2015 10:34

Yuck, sorry naff name!

GoldPlatedBacon · 08/12/2015 10:33

I know a Yorkshire terrier called Gypsy. I find it rather embarrassing as we live in an area with a lot of travellers

tthisisgettingboring · 08/12/2015 10:20

Awful. Great for a Border Collie though

Starspread · 08/12/2015 10:20

Very un PC (or 'offensive', if you'd prefer a different word). Gypsy and Traveller communities still face huge and devastating prejudice in the UK and Europe today, and the storybook idea of a gypsy bears little resemblance to people's actual lived experience. Sorry :/

RubberDicky · 08/12/2015 10:19

I used to know a Jack Russell Terrier named Gypsy, she was a lovely little cantankerous thing. Unfortunately I think it's not a great name for a child; my parents were boho hippies in the 1970s and I would HATE it if my name reflected that, as I'm the least boho person you could imagine.

What if the term becomes even less socially acceptable?

Pranmasghost · 08/12/2015 10:19

We had a pony called Gypsy!
It is a name but I'm not sure it would wear well for a child.

TheoriginalLEM · 08/12/2015 10:09

What is the Chalet school? is it some sort of mnet imaginary school?

I think the name SOUNDS lovely and it conjures up an image of, well, a gypsy - in floaty lacey clothes, big brown eyse and gold hoop earrings. Which is a nice image for me. Sadly, other people might not see it that way, and for that reason i'd not use it.

R0nJ0n · 08/12/2015 10:06

Where I come from, especially amongst the older generation, gypsy often used as a term of abuse (along with pikey and gyppo). Not pc but true.

GissASquizz · 08/12/2015 10:03

It suits a labrador beautifully. I wouldn't use it for a person.

manicinsomniac · 08/12/2015 10:00

I think it's really pretty and I've only ever come across it in the Chalet School!

Whether or not I'd actually use it another thing. Sadly, I think probably not. A bit un p-c.

spritefairy · 08/12/2015 09:46

Meant to say dh! Sorry

HackerFucker22 · 08/12/2015 09:43

Don't like at all - too 'try hard' to sound Boho and original.

Sorry do you mean your dad likes the name or your babies dad likes it? One has a lot more sway than the other?
