Is Colette a nice name?

I am another Irish poster who knows a few Colettes (and Bernadettes and Thereses), born in the 60s and 70s.

I really like the name though I also love Pauline and Paulette so make of that what you will..

I like Colette, i know a Nicolette who calls herself Colette for short. When I met her I remember thinking I liked her name

I had a friend from school (UK) with that name (mid 30s). I think it's a nice name.

Another French name I like is Coralie

I'm Irish, I know lots of Colettes aged 45-65. Definitely a name of that generation, like Noirín, Maura, Nuala etc. I still think it's a pretty name though. My name is very of its time also and I wonder if it will make a comeback in my lifetime!

I know two lovely colettes but it always sounds like culotte to me and they are horrible!

I went to school with a Colette she was a bit fey...I think there are lots more lovely French names like Celeste

I know 3. One elderly, very grand French lady and two women in their 40s of Irish heritage.

I think it's got a nice, warm ring about. A similar French name you might consider is Coralie.

I know a Colette, and she is really nice. It doesn't seem fuddy duddy to me, but then I have no Irish connections!

It's a gorgeous name and I say that even though I'm in Ireland and all Colette's I know are in their forties. If you are GB definitely still use it, it's lovely.

It is a French name but very common in Ireland, especially among older ladies, because it's the name of a saint (Bernadette is similar).
I think it's lovely though. Old lady names are coming back!

I like it. - there is a Colette at the DC's school (primary) and it's unusual and lovely.

But then my Dd has an Irish/French overlap name so I would say that!

If you like it, go for it - better a name you love than a name you are not so keen on and a squillion other children have as well.

chicaguapa Interesting. I would have heard that name as Colleen and would have thought it was Irish.....
Seems to be quite a lot of overlap between French/Irish names!

Coline is fairly similar and is soft-sounding and French.

I don't like it. Roll it there Colette, indeed, Gay Byrne would think it was a lovely name for a lovely woman.

I dislike Nicolette too.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost is right, it's all subjective. I don't like Colette because it's a deeply unfashionable name in Ireland. But if I'd never heard it before I might like it.

I like Sylvie but apparently that's hicksville central in France.

My favourite is probably Emilie but DH hates that.
