Persian names

So I am really getting ahead of myself here as I only just started my first IVF cycle BUT I want to do some positive pfb visualization Wink

DH is originally from Tehran and I am really keen to choose names which have some Persian links. We are hoping that our child will speak both Farsi and English at home but DH is keen to avoid religious names. Problem is that I can't think of any Persian names I really like.... So what do folks think of:

Roxanna (Sting's 80's whore and a drinking game when I was at university...) Confused
Azar
Rosita

Or for boys...

Anoush
Caspar (friendly ghost?)
Cyrus

(I quite like Darius too, but I can't do it because Pop Idol.)

Reza is my favourite male Persian name and I love Leila or Bahar for a girl.

LOVE Roxanna and Rosita. Roxanna is Alexander the Great's wife to me and a feisty woman! Great name.

I knew a Cyrus and a Darius when I was at school. Good names, although I can see why you'd be put off Darius. Caspar is cool too - doesn't make me think of the ghost.

Strangely, I find Azar quite a masculine sound and Anoush rather feminine (to my ill educated ear!)

One thing that strikes me is that a lot of the names that have come up on this thread are not Persian at all. Maybe it doesn't bother you as long as it's Middle Eastern but I thought I would point it out just in case because I know it was a big no no for DP who is Iranian.

For example Mariam Farrah Zara Amir Ali Camilla

Some Persian names I like or which are in DP's family are:

I love Rosita and Farrah. Leila and Mariam really nice too.

I think Caspar is too ghost. Love Aria but agree it's seen as a girl's name in the UK now. I like Azar and Peri

I only know one Persian family (I think - Iran is Persia, yes?)

Kassra (boy) and Kemia (girl) - I like them both

My DH is Persian, names in his family I like are :

Leila, Parvine, Anissa, Shahnaz, Marjann, Naid (pronounced Nye-eed)

Ruih, Kian, Farid

That's all I can think of at the moment...

Caspar/Casper is lovely and the two I know, teenage and a baby have none of the friendly ghost as it hasn't been around for years. No youngsters have a clue!

Azar is lovely but is it a male name in some other languages? I know a male Pakistani Azar for eg.

How about Za(h)ra(h)? If my googling is correct it's both Arabic and Persian, and works very well in English to boot.

I really like the name Peri (which means Fairy), which I believe is Persian.

Mimi thanks for replying. I love the name Mariam. I love the name Marjane too - especially after watching Persepolis Smile but DH has vetoed it...

I'll give variants of our names.

Shahram for a boy (it's variant of my husband's Indian name which means exactly the same thing - Lord Ram). It's pre-Islamic.

Mariam - my name is the Hebrew version but I get called this a lot too. Dark hair/features too so bit petrified at the moment...

I quite like Darius. I think you could get away with it - there's loads of Sienna's around now for example which was pretty unheard of until Miller became famous

I use to work with a Banafsheh - I love that name.

I think Game of Thrones has made Aria popular as a girls name.

Also...do you think Aria is too girly these days? Technically it is a Persian boys' name but I know 2 female Aria's so it seems a bit odd (although I love the name).
