Inspire me with some Welsh girls names

Bit advance as we are only TTC but I'm having a thinking evening Wink

DP's mum is Welsh so I quite like the idea of a Welsh girls names. DD has a very traditional English name (the long one that begins with A) so we need something that goes with that. Otherwise the current leaders for names are Margaret (Maggie) and Joanna.

I love Cerys but DP isn't keen. The only slight issue is that I don't do well with S's and F's so nothing too S-y works still upset at the loss of Saul as a boys name because of that

Any good ideas?

Oo, what a nice thread. DH is english and I am welsh, so dc's have english first names and welsh second names, it was a bit of a tradition where I lived for the granny to name the baby. Does your MiL have a preference? Could just use it as a middle name. In the family, my DD is known by her welsh middle name. Oh, also my middle name is Haf, and I always got teased in (welsh) school Shock

I'm always surprised Ceri isn't mentioned more on these threads. There were loads in school with me in the 90s (ie born in the 80s). I knew both boys and girls called Ceri, but to me it's a girl name, and given how popular Cerys/Carys are on MN I'm always surprised it doesn't crop up more.

Ahem... Catrin is pronounced Cat-rin.

Failing me that, I love Nia, Megan, Tegwen, Llinos, Angharad, Llio, Myfanwy. Though if your dd is such an Englishy name, something like Megan would probably be more suited. Don't live in Wales anymore but know a few Rhians pronounced Rhi - an. If your dd is shortened to the unisex version, Angharad could work as I know 2 shortened to Hari.

Cariad means beloved. It is a term of endearment. It is like calling your second born Darling.

I didn't think Cariad was used as a name either, but there was a woman called Cariad Lloyd on QI last night.

(Hilariously, she was on the same team as Rhod Gilbert, who at one point kept saying 'stop it, Cariad!', which made it sound like they were either related or married.)

Perhaps it isn't typically used as a name, but I do know a little Cariad. She's 5. Lives in Canada with Welsh parents x

"Cariad" is not used as a name. It means 'lovely', as in addressing a person as 'love' in English.

Angharad (would be murdered by the English tongue though, they might say 'Angerad'.
Tanwen (means 'white fire')

Eleri (again would be murdered by the English and it might become 'Ellery')

Thanks for the suggestions but I'm now thinking maybe Welsh names are a bit too Welsh - we don't live in Wales, don't have a Welsh surname, in fact there's nothing to obviously connect us with Wales (unless you meet DP's mum). I'm not sure how well any of these names, bar Elin and Catrin, would sound alongside a sister with a very traditional English girls name, and a very traditional English surname.

Sigh... back to the drawing board maybe!

My DDs have Welsh names.

We needed manageable ones for outside Wales though. On our lists were:

Haf (with V sound at end, not F) - means summer

I loved but DH dismissed as "too Welsh" (as in would spend their whole lives spelling their name for people. I speak Welsh, so don't see the problem! Dd2 ended up as Elin (the easiet one IMO!), and we get many many different attempts at spelling - Elen, Ellen, Alin, Ellin etc etc)
