Please help my husband and I - we are so undecided! The baby is due in 5 weeks and we're still no nearer! All go with our surname and the initials wouldn't spell anything ridiculous! Do you like / dislike any of the following?:

GIRLS
Hazel
Amber
Robyn
Holly
Rosa
Rowan

BOYS
Rex
Leo
Max
Rory
Ralph

My favourites are Holly and Rory :)

ExBallerina · 31/10/2015 14:58

I like Rowan and Holly best from the girls.

I like all of the boys names except Ralph.

IoraRua · 31/10/2015 14:55

Rex - dog (and yes, I'm aware loads of dogs now are Milo and Charlie etc. Still feels Labrador-y to me!)
Ralph - bit wet sounding
Max - meh, again a bit doggy.
Rory - grand
Leo - also grand

Hazel - lovely
Amber - ehh no. I find it a tiny bit strippery or something.
Robyn - nothing wrong with it...I don't like it thiugh and I can't quite put my finger on why Grin
Rosa - gorgeous
Holly - fine
Rowan - really don't like

To be very honest with you, as a teacher I find the current trend of -y and -ie names makes them all seem a bit insipid and blend into one another (the names that is, not the children). Milly, Molly, Lily, Sophie, Rosie etc. So personally I wouldn't choose a name along those lines.

ShamelessBreadAddict · 31/10/2015 14:47

Rowan obviously not Rowab!

ShamelessBreadAddict · 31/10/2015 14:46

I really like Hazel, Amber and Rowab for girl and Rory for boy. Not keen on the rest.

Edma · 31/10/2015 14:19

Hazel and Rory

Salmotrutta · 31/10/2015 14:14

Love Hazel - very underused nowadays!

Have you considered Rowena as an alternative to Rowan? Also very underused nowadays.

I like Leo and Ralph too.

Binkybix · 31/10/2015 08:35

Of the girls I like Amber and Robyn the best. Robyn was on short list for my nearly 2 week old. We would have gone for Robin though. (I have a recent thread on this choice!)

Boys - I really love Ralph! Not keen on Rory and think all the others are nice enough.

JanuaryJuniper · 27/10/2015 19:34

Love love love Rex!

Hazel and Rosa are lovely from your girls list!

Did I mention I love Rex?!

PallasCat · 27/10/2015 17:57

My my, OP, we have similar taste!

GIRLS
Hazel - LOVE - DH is fighting hard to keep this on our shortlist, but I regretfully think it's awful with our surname. My issue with it is very specific about our surname., would strongly encourage anyone else to use it!
Amber - like a lot - DH also fighting to keep this on our shortlist! But one of my best friend's daughters has this name, so I'm reluctant.
Robyn - like a lot
Holly - least keen on this, nice though, especially as you're having a winter baby
Rosa - very nice
Rowan - LOVE, on our shortlist

BOYS
Rex - least favourite from your boys, but it's ok
Leo - do like this, but I've taught too many for it to be on my shortlist!
Max - LOVE
Rory - quite like
Ralph - LOVE - favourite from your boys, very similar to one on our shortlist

Good luck OP!

Amber and Max are my faves on your list.

Fairylea · 24/10/2015 15:20

All of them are okay except Rex and Rory .... Sorry but I think those are awful!

yeOldeTrout · 24/10/2015 15:15

Like
Hazel, Max

Meh
Amber, Robyn, Holly, Rowan, Rex, Leo, Rory

Dislike
Rosa, so wet!
Ralph

IsadoraQuagmire · 24/10/2015 15:02

Love Rosa (it's one of my middle names) and Hazel is gorgeous!

TempsPerdu · 24/10/2015 13:55

Absolutely love Rowan and Rosa - they'd be my joint favourites. Quite like Hazel and Robyn - love the sound and 'idea' of Hazel as a nature/colour name, but I know a fair few middle-aged Hazels which dates it a bit for me. Not a big fan of Amber or Holly - both have pretty sounds but feel a bit insipid to me.

Rory would definitely be my pick from your boys' list, with Leo a fairly distant second. Really don't like Ralph. Do like Robin for a boy though (with nn either Rob or Red)!

Janey215 · 24/10/2015 13:46

Rex - dog name
Ralph - is always the slightly (or worse )inappropriately behaved odd ball in books and films!
Rowan is better for a boy.
Amber is gorgeous as is Holly.
Like Leo and max
I think it's more important to have a nice name than worry about how common it is!
It never did any Sharon, Tracey, Clare, Sarah or Emma that I know any harm having a popular name !! ??

Lweji · 24/10/2015 08:31

I wouldn't go for Rowan, as I'd think of a boy, or Rex, as it sounds like a dog or like Princess (Rex means king, or similar).

ashesandfire · 24/10/2015 08:28

Love Hazel. So pretty and uncommon.
Rosa is nice but I prefer Rose, Rosalind or Rosanna.
Of your boys names I like Rory. How about Rowan or Robin for a boy? I like both as girls names but even more as boys names.

BugPlaster · 24/10/2015 06:58

I like Hazel and Rosa.
Max and Leo would be best of the boys but lots of them around.

Duckdeamon · 24/10/2015 06:45

Don't like Amber or Rex

cornishglos · 24/10/2015 06:43

GIRLS
Hazel - nice, unusual, earthy
Amber - nice, fairly uncommon, pretty, nature themed
Robyn - dislike (teeny bird, not nice sound)
Holly - boring to me
Rosa - very pretty
Rowan - dislike the sound again

BOYS
Rex - dislike, too 'trendy', not classic enough
Leo - cool name, prefer Leon
Max - personally I always think Max means the superlative (biggest/ best) and seems too much to live up to!
Rory - hard to say
Ralph - too posh

I like Hazel, Amber, Rosa and Leo

WanderingTrolley1 · 24/10/2015 01:36

Amber, Holly, Leo, Max.

dotdotdotmustdash · 24/10/2015 01:16

Hazel/Rosa
Max/Rory

Nice set of choices! The nicest set I've seen on this site.

CakeRattleandRoll · 24/10/2015 00:35

Favourites are:
Hazel
Rosa (prefer Rosanna)
Rex
Rory

The rest are OK - I don't dislike any of them.
