Ffion or Rose

Hubby and I love both of these names but can't settle on one. Is Ffion too Welshy? Is Rose too much of a 'second name'?

I don't like Ffion at all. The only one I've come across is William Hague's wife and I don't really like to be reminded of William Hague.

Rose is lovely and although mega popular as a middle name doesn't seem to be that commonly used as a first name.

Just to be aware, in French "fion" means "anus" - a friend had the mickey taken out of her a lot over there.

(Penny similarly did - pénis).

Ffion is a lovely name, it is unquestionably Welsh, doesn't stop people using Dylan, Megan, Seren, Rhys, Bethan etc. I think Ffion is becoming more mainstream in recent years and more popular too.

Rose is a middle name, rosalie, Rosie or Rosa work better with rose as a nickname.

Ffion is nice, but I have a special fondness for Fiona.

Rose is nice, Rosa is even nicer and the two I've known have been lovely girls.

Fionn is an Irish boys name so Ffion ends up sounding a bit masculine to my ears because of that.

Ffion, definitely. I had it picked out for DS1. I've only known lovely Ffions, it's a gorgeous name.

Rose is gorgeous and hardly used as a first name. It is simple and classic.

Ffion is very Welsh and a bit frumpy.

I live in Wales so I'm used to Ffion, I like it, but outside of Wales people may be less sure.

In my opinion Ffion is a harsh on the ears. It's just a personal opinion that it's a horrible name in comparison to Fiona. Obviously others disagree, as is their opinion that they are entitled to.

How so? It's just an observation, as the op asked for an opinion - not 'oh if you don't like one of these names, don't bother commenting, I only want to hear nice things'. It is a harsh name to my ears as some others would be to you. Ffion is obviously a 'nice name' to some, as they have named their children so. It's not to everyone's taste though, and the side note of every one I've met being as so is mostly tounge in cheek.

mrsgently your post is rude and insulting. Absolutely nothing wrong with having likes and dislikes for names, but there are politer ways to say things.

Plenty of us who are either called Ffion or have a daughter called ffion will have clicked on this thread....

Sorry for the derail op. I think both names are beautiful and think they go together really well in either combination. And you have royalty on your side with rose, for the Queen's sister Princess Margaret Rose

Ffion is pronounced fee-on. Nice and simple. We are leaning towards Ffion for its unique edge to Rose but who knows, all could change! Especially since we still have a few weeks to go.

I love Ffion and find it soft and not at all harsh sounding like pp.

Rose is lovely too but I do prefer Ffion.

Ffion is stunning! Elegant, feminine, strong and unusual but with no pronunciation issues. I'd say a perfect name. No one will ever forget your daughter's name.
Rose is fine. So common though.
However I think Ffion Rose flows very well.
Nobody uses middle names imo, except those of the Lily May variety which are almost a double first name.

If DS's name were not quite similar, I'd definitely nick Ffion for a future DD.

Ffion is horrible, such a harsh name. Fiona is much nicer. May be biased as well, every Ffion I've known has been a bit of a cow (I'm sure that's mostly coincide though).

I'd go Rose, from your two choices.

Ffion is OK, I'd assume a connection to Wales.

I wouldn't worry about it being too Welsh though. It seems to be one of the go to names for English speaking people who want a welsh name.

Rose is lovely as a first name. Beautiful.

Rose definitely. While very tedious and over used a mn. It is virtually un heard of for a first name. I don't why, mind . As it's glamorous, elegasnt, cute on the name peg yet also sophisticated and powerful in the boardroom. Suits you right through life. In no way tease worthy. What's not to love.

Thanks for all the comments, really appreciate all your opinions but still no closer to a decision so keep them flooding in. Also regarding the name Ffion, did anyone/does anyone not know how to pronounce it or if you heard it, would you know how to spell it (just so I know that we aren't going for something too unusual - I don't think it is though)?

As for a middle name, if we went with Rose as a first name, we'd have Ffion as a middle, whereas because Rose is such a popular middle name, if we go with Ffion for a first name, I wouldn't have Rose for the middle. I like either Ffion Isabelle or Ffion Olivia.
