Muslim Girls Names..what do you think?

Just wondering what people think of the following names and how easy you think they are to pronounce:

Sana
Aleena
Ammarah
Sanaya
Mariya (MAR-ri-yuh)
Zahra/Zara
Zoya
Zaynah
Layla
Samarah

I am aware there are a few ways of spelling my name. It doesn't really bother me when it's spelt a different way to the way I do, but Lala/Lola which I offen get bugs me!

My own stepbrother of 20+ years still spells it Laylor Grin

I'm a Layla and you would be amazed how many people on a daily basis cannot pronounce or spell my name!

I do like hearing the funny word associations people do though!

Zoya and soya
And Sana with sanitary products lol!

DH liked Haya but it just made

A bit rubbish at explaining phonetic pronunciation but I think I know how to pronounce those names. Maybe I didn't explain it properly.

With both of them isn't the stress on the second syllable?

Ammarah and Samarah are not pronounced as explained here.

You say them the way they're written. Its not Um-mar- ah

My daughter is best friends with a Zaynub and I think names starting with Z are so exotic and cool.
I have a child with dairy allergy so Zoya is too close to Soya but the other names are lovely.

Really like Mariam - I've known some very cool Mariams! And I think pronunciation is not problematic with Mariam.

I also really like Sumaya, Feyle, Maymuna and Noor.

I live in a Muslim country, and agree that the pronunciation of Mariyah is problematic to non-Muslims - usually ends up as Maria.

I know several Aleenas and love the name, but also know several Alina's too, who are all American - so the name crosses easily between cultures.

I personally really love Mariam, Shaikha, Noora, Halah, Lena.......

Hmmm Ammarah would be pronounced Uh-mar-rah with emphasis on 'mar'. I think I've explained that right

How do you pronounce Ammarah? I think it looks beautiful just written down - would love to know if I'm saying it properly in my head!

All fine but except I wouldn't do Mariyah if you don't like the Maria pronunciation. You will have to suck it up a bit or go insane. Your Dd may not care at all which pronunciation she gets, though.

People will have different pronunciations I would pronounce mariyah as ma-ri- yah the 'ma' as a short sound rather than 'mar', like Mariyam. I have an Aliyah and everybody says her name differently! I've got the simplest name ever but people turn it into another name by adding ie on the end - even when it's written in front of them!! You go for whichever is your fave and pronounce it how you like!

Mariyah is one of our favourites but also the one which we will have to correct people on the most I think. It will inevitable be prounounced 'Maria' or like 'Mariah' Carey. When in fact the emphasis is on 'mar' being pronounced like 'car'. She will spend her whole life correcting people on first meeting. Is that a big deal? Maybe.
