Huw??

I love Huw but we are not Welsh so we have a Euan.
His middle name is Thomas and my rather dippy MIL told everyone we had named him after the Welsh runner (currently on strictly)

Oh just to say also that I have to spell both my first name and surname and it does not bother me at all. My first name is 8 letters long and my surname is double barelled so a 3 letter name seems a doddle to me :)

I think Huw is a great name but I always have a problem with names which have to be spelled out ie H-U-W rather than H-U-G-H. This is why I can't handle names like Rebekah ( you know who you are ).
Currently I favour Rex ( wrecks? ) but my opinion on names changes with the wind.

Huw is the name we have chosen for our soon to be DS :) It's a classic timeless name and I struggle to see how it could be mispronounced! I also think that due to the newsreader it is well known now. Go for it!

I like Huw and Thomas. Not so keen on Ewan.

I wouldn't worry too much about 'Iwan' being pronounced 'Eye-wan'. This was something my parents worried about though, and called DB 'Euan' - he still gets called 'Evan' some people are just terrible with names, don't change your naming preferences for them.

That said, 'Ewan' is absolutely lovely.

Huw is nice, very recognisably a name, and I'd pronounce it the same as Hugh. Is that correct?
I don't see why if the surname is complex, the first name necessarily has to be very simple. It's not like there is a set amount of trouble people are prepared to go to, to say a name.
There are so so so many names that have spelling variants. Even simple names. In my immediate family we have Tom (Thom), Brian (Bryan), Catherine (Katherine), Helen (Helene) and Jean (Jeanne). The only names without alternatives are the Irish names actually (Niamh and Ciara).

Love Huw, and agree that it is pronounced huw not hoo.

I prefer Iwan to Ewan.

I know lots of boys called Tomos nn Tomi if you want to put a Welsh slant on that.

Noooo it's not pronounced Hoo! It's pronounced hue. And if there's any danger of him being a hoo I'd rethink the name. That would drive me dotty!

I got slated for planning on giving DD a Welsh name. People told me she'd be called 'ceiling'.

It's never been mispronounced, and we're constantly complimented on what a lovely name she has. MN gets really funny about 'foreign' names.

I said, I like the name Huw. Being of Welsh heritage myself, I know a couple and love it.

However, having grown up with a forename that is commonly spelt in different ways (think Jayne and Jane) and a surname I always had to spell for everyone, I personally wouldn't inflict it upon anyone. My opinion. Nowt to do with religion, and all to do with personal experience.

Huw off the BBC News is on my TV all the time - it's quite a well known name I think.

So why do so many posters on MN think it's fine to dismiss Welsh/Irish/Scottish names?

Lots of names can be spelled more than one way, would be easier to list the ones which can't.

There are pronounciation issues - the correct pronounciation (up north anyway) is Hiw (can't think of a better way to explain it) but I've heard a lot of English people pronounce it 'Hoo' and 'Hyoo', and down south too.

I am not Welsh but I have definitely seen this spelling and I like it.

I like the name Huw and the acknowledgement of his Welsh heritage, but I am inclined to agree with BornInThe60s that if he's goig to have to spend his life spelling his surname, it might be kinder to go with a name everyone can spell, which, from your list might be Thomas.

Love Huw! I've inly ever known lovely Huws. I also think Iwan is nicer than Ewan. But I do live in Wales and both DS1&2 have very Welsh names.

Love the name but having been given a name that can be spelt in more than one way I'd say no....I hate having to spell my name especially since I married and have a last name that I have to spell too!

From what you say your son will have to spell and pronounce his last name and giving him a first name that doesn't need spelling out might be easier for,him?
