Help! I need a girl's name for 3 week old!

I had always imagined calling a Baby girl Kaitlyn.

We already have a boy - Daniel. My husband and I suspected that the new bang would be a boy too so the girl was a surprise.

The problem is that I have now really gone off Kaitlyn. Everyone says 'Oh that's lovely - she'll be Katie'. But I don't like Katie. It's really put me off.

I like Rebecca, Beth,Eloise, Kayla and (my latest suggestion) Leah.

My husband doesn't like any of these and seems stuck on Kaitlyn.

I'm hoping that the Mumsnet Jury might have some new suggestions that would go with Daniel?

This poor baby needs a name!!

I don't think Daniel and Kaitlyn go together at all. Do you like Kate as a nickname? The problem with names that are shortenable (new word of the day there) is that you don't really have any control over it once the child is old enough to choose for themselves.

Daniel and Leah as a pairing would make me think you were Jewish (obv nothing wrong with that - just what I'd presume).

Rebecca, Beth both lovely. Not huge fan of Eloise.

Not much help but Daniel and Caitlin had been our names for years and I think they sound good together (ended up using different name for DS). I'd never shorten a Caitlin to Katie if that helps and don't know any who have been.

I'm not keen on Kate either... My biggest issue with Kaitlyn is that it would be shortened and, as I'm using the American spelling, people would probably always spell it Caitlin (as previous poster's suggestion Smile).

We're not Jewish but I don't think that assumption would bother me.

Part of why I like Leah and Beth is that they're harder to shorten. I agree that you can't control what happens as child gets older and goes to school.

I think Emma's too popular and Dora just makes me think of Dora the explorer!

Any other suggestions that might work? Especially as my husband doesn't seem to like ANY of my other suggestions!!

Obv nothing wrong with people assuming you were Jewish but unless the kids had names like Abraham and Shoshana it wouldn't occur to me that they might be.

I like Leah best from your list.

Rebecca, Beth, Rachel and Ruth etc are all equally "Jewish" = "Old testament" as Leah to me, but I wouldn't think anything of them paired with Daniel or as you say, care whether anyone else did.

The only time I've ever thought anything (which was "that's an unusual combination" rather than anything negative) was when I cam across a Ruth, Rebecca and Christine combo. There was a brother also with an old testament Biblical name but don't want to add here as it would be obvious to anyone in the family if googled.

Some of our other options might not suit your tastes but since we both like Daniel and Kaitlyn they were:

If it's any help Kaitlyn is fairly popular where I live in Scotland and in my experience isn't normally shortened to Kate or Katie etc.

How about Catriona as an alternative?

I'm a teacher and teach about 5 kaitlyns (various spellings)- none of them get called Katie or Kate...it's usually Katherine that gets shortened to Katie.

I work with someone who has a girl called annabelle, and I asked if she has a nickname because I didn't want to start calling her Anna or something if she's not called that by her parents. Most people would copy what the parents are saying I think.

I know what you mean about not liking the potentially shortened version of a name, but if you like the full name then use it!

The Daniel I know has a sister called Hannah. I also suggest:
Zara as above, sounds lovely with Daniel

IME Kaitlyn doesn't get shortened to Katie and if it does, you can always correct people. My friend has a Bethany and she has never once been shortened to Beth, she may do by her friends now she is 12 but that is her choice now I guess.

How important is the spelling to you? People are less keen to "change initial" so Caitlin would be less likely to be shortened. I guess it could be shortened to Caity but that is used a lot less.
