DSD is thinking of using Dawn for her DD when born. What do you think? If you don't like it what first name would go with Dawn as a middle name. Surname is 2 syllables.

I'm a Dawn (67 baby) and no one has ever said anything about the crack of dawn to me ever !!

temporarily - I totally agree, I would never dream of telling her I don't like it much.

Today she mentioned liking the name Melissa too so I said I thought Melissa Dawn sounded good.

myotheruser - I can't get the toffee chewing dog vision out of my head now :)

The Dawn I know isn't frumpy but a gorgeous talented artist! Does that really matter though? Am just saying! You cant really predict what a Dawn an Artemisia will look like

I was going to suggest Aurora too. I nearly went for that with Rory as a nn (am a Gilmore girls fan if that means anything to anyone!) But then dd got a Rory boy in her class and it put me off. Dawn doesn't seem as 'pretty' as Aurora in that it's a bit harsher sounding. Nice enough though but I'd prefer it as a middle name.

A friend of mine was going to dawn until her grandfather told her mum that in the army they used say that the men were so deprived of female company that they'd fuck the crack of dawn. I've never thought of the name in the same light since. Shame, coz it's actually quite nice.

It sounds a bit fat and frumpy to me. Not just because it's dated, but it's the fact it's quite short and thuddy as a sound. Agree with others suggesting a longer name with Dawn as a MN.

There was a Dawn at my DD's nursery and I was really Hmm when I heard it. It never grew on me, and wouldnt really say it suited her in my mind.

I like it a lot, and agree that it would make a lovely mn. I'd want a longer, 'fussier' middle name to go with it, if using it for a first name.

Im not keen myself tbh. Megan Dawn and Helena Dawn sound good from your suggestions. Will try and nudge DSD in that direction.

It's a very late 70s/80s name to me. There seemed to be dozens of them in both my younger sisters' classes (born 1974 and '78). I'd class it mentally with Linda, Karen, Michelle and the like.

Long long ago I knew two sisters named Dawn and Eve. Old ladies then, so no longer around.
