A brother for Artemisia

Originally it was going to be Lucian...yep we are those parents. But we got cold feet and decided it was too wanky even for us. (I love Lucian to any Lucian owners, but we thought in combination with Artemisia, it was a bit...hmm)

So then, after much discussion, the only name we could agree on, was Milo. But we have now come across, not one, not two, but THREE dogs called Milo. Apparently it is in the top ten dog names in the UK. This has... put us off. And we don't like Miles.

Names I like, which DH has roundly rejected:

Tobias
Marcus
Sebastian
Casper
Silas
Felix

Anyone got any good suggestions, before we name our son this generation's equivalent of Rex?

I am 39+6 and getting a bit worried that we seem to have NO candidates. DH has been totally unable to come up with any suggestions.

Phidias is probably the most famous Classical Greek sculptor. Hieronymus (Bosch) would cause horrendous spelling/pronunciation problems. Edgar? (for Degas) Salvador (Dali)? Pablo (Picasso)? Claude?

What about Louis? Then you can sing What a Wonderful World to him. Grin

ediepop · 26/09/2015 18:53

Definitely not Urban though. That just means 'city' to me. Pope or not.

Love Jasper. And DH actually not unkeen. But a good friend named her DS this when he was born in June, and while no one owns a name etc, I'd feel awkward about it.

Maybe there is a link between love of Georgette Heyer and a fondness for somewhat OTT names. I can see how that might be the case.

Gruach · 26/09/2015 13:12

NegativeIron - 40 years ago (Shock) I could have said the same. I've read nothing of hers since then but perhaps it's where my own taste for flowery names originates.

NegativeIron · 26/09/2015 13:04

Grouchy, I could prob compete for Europe on GH.

GrouchyKiwi · 26/09/2015 12:42

(I love finding more people who read Heyer.)

NegativeIron · 26/09/2015 12:17

Has anyone said Jasper yet ?

(JD, he and Venetia are prob my fave characters in the oeuvre)

JasperDamerel · 26/09/2015 09:35

Urban.

Sounds modern, but also a pope.

I'm a fan of poncy too, most of my family had been named in this thread Grin but what is considered poncy now may change for e.g my brother is Oliver which in 1970s Ireland was rediculously poncy, not so much any more.

BathtimeFunkster · 26/09/2015 08:50

You shouldn't have changed from Lucian, it's by far the best name on your new list and works best with Artemisia.

Why is it OK to give his daughter an outrageously poncy name, but not his son?

[I am a fan of the poncy, BTW, but I think you need to be consistent with it. Artemisia and Alexander is terrible.]

violetwellies · 26/09/2015 08:39

I love Vincent btw.

Gruach · 26/09/2015 08:35

Thelonius.

But I still like Lucian and Francis.

violetwellies · 26/09/2015 08:35

So pronounced Rarf not Ralf (who is in his 70s) is a regional variant?

ediepop · 26/09/2015 08:32

Rafe is the traditional pronunciation. Ralf is a modern variant.

Sorry to but in, but I'm northern and sometimes when you lot write pronounced I then have to ask is it long or short A Smile
So Ralph, locally, is pronounced Rarf upthread it was pronounced "rafe" is that a regional difference or plain wrong
