I stupidly told dm what I planned to call ds2

I just can't keep secrets! She frowned and suggested a load of other names and now I'm doubting my choice. Argh!

Ds1 has a slightly unusual name (often either praised on mn or slated for being too 'aspirational'), so wanted something slightly more run of the mill for ds2. I love Rupert but considering my very northern, wc pil can barely bring themselves to say ds1's name we decided to compromise and choose Rowan.

Having stupidly told dm the name I'm now doubting myself. It's alright isn't it? And wouldn't sound too odd with a sibling with a slightly unusual name?

I love Rowan for a girl. But not really for a boy.

Rupert really isn't a nice name for anyone.

But my opinion, like your DM's, doesn't matter. It's your baby so you get to name him. Your DM has had her chance to name a baby, she doesn't get a say in naming yours.

I like Rowan or Roan (more male spelling I think), but I don't like Ronan. now THAT is common.

Mothers never like the name.

my xmil was worse. She kept saying "but you have to think of the child " in this annoying patronising voice. Then she suggested the name of her late second husband, the man she'd left my x's father for. Hilarious.

Without knowing your son's name, I don't think anyone can say whether your DM is right about sibling names.

In its own right Rowan is nice. But it DOES depend on what your son is called.

Just ignore her!

When I had my son, his name (Dexter) was only just starting to gain popularity so I had all sorts of comments regarding it. I even had a friend name her dog Dexter not long after my son was born!

If you love the name then stick to your guns, don't worry what anyone else thinks. I found having responses in my head for typical comments helped. If someone compared him to the TV series murdered I'd say 'I've got high hopes for my boy!'

No one will say a word once he's here.

I'm with your DM it isn't a nice name I'm really fussy about boy's names though. There are not msny I do like, but our opinions (mine especially a stranger on the internet) matter not one wit. This is your baby. You can call him what you like. Your DM has had her day choosing names when she had you and any siblings you might have.
I'm telling you now, If someone told me not use a name. I would damn well use the name out of spite.
Rowan can be used for either gender.

Is Rowan a girls name? That was one of dm's reason for not liking it but I just think Rowan Atkinson and Williamson. Another reason for her dislike was that it sounded 'common' compared to ds1's name, said it would be like shouting 'Ptolemy and Dave' accross the park (ds1's name not quite that posh!)

Thanks for talking some sense into me, I think having a gp on each side hting one of our ds's name each evens things up a bit.

I worked with a Rowan once. Lovely person, always thought it was a nice name. Unusual but not one of those 'what is it, how are you spelling that, is there an l in that? ' sort of names (like one of my dts! ). If you like it, keep it. And I am from up North. X

I love Rowan (although I do prefer it for a girl).

Rowan is both a boys' and girls' name. It's lovely. Rupert is nice too. Call your baby what you want!

If you and your DP/H love the name Rupert, then name your DS2 Rupert! Your PILs might think it's a bit 'posh southern' at first, but then it'll just be their gorgeous Grandson's name - or Roo for short.

However, if you and your DH/P prefer Rowan, go with that. Your mum might not have picked it, but would you pick your name/your siblings' names/s? She'd had her go! Again, your mum will get used to it.

Both Rupert and Rowan are lovely names. if you go for Rupert, you'll get lots of yellow scarves

Rowan is lovely. Not sure about Rupert tbh. The only ones I've met in real life were public school wa*ers

Personally I don't like the name Rowan but that's not the point... If it's the name you've chosen then stick to it. She won't think twice about it once your DC arrives. Just don't tell anyone else what you've chosen until baby is here!

All four grandparents were united in their (unexpressed but visible) horror at DS's name (at the unusual end of Biblical). It was a fait accompli, however, as he'd already been born at that point. And given the utterly ghastly names they'd given several of their children, it wasn't that I gave two hoots.
