Clement, Clarence, Roscoe or Gilbert?

Yes and no, Villainous - I do think people feel braver sitting fairly anonymously behind keyboards than they might otherwise, if actually faced with people whose names they weren't keen on. Then again, maybe I'm just a lot more polite than I thought I was :)

StanSmith - the Gilbert I know (I'm actually married to him but didn't want to out myself...) reports very minimal teasing due to name, back at junior achool, and wouldn't change it for anything. Thank you for your concern, but his relationship with his parents is excellent!

Going back to a comment from a poster on the first page - something along the lines of "I think some Munsnetters must live in different worlds to me and my friends" - well, yes. Obviously not literally. But as someone else has said, I guess people are comfortable with what they're used to, hence the unbridled horror at something other than the norm for their community/environment.

Unfortunately I reckon that the typical opinion expressed here will be mild and tolerant compared to that of the brutal general public.
If someone is lucky enough to be a very cool or witty or charismatic person, they can however make any name work for them.

Some like those names some don't. When choosing them we tried tio imagine them at school/work/pensioners and tried to make sure the names fit either in full or shortened.

I think they're terrible names tbh. The only one I like is Roscoe - but only because it was the name of an old friends doberman pinscher pub dog that used to help itself to pork scratchings at closing time. Sorry.

Sorry another one in the hate them camp - they're all mummy's boy names to me. Completely different to Astrid who is a strong independent female imo.

I do get the feeling some parents just don't like their child given some of the cringe worthy names I see on here. However your baby your choice I just wish some parents would try to look in to the future a bit to see how their chosen name will affect the child.

I came across a toddler called Clement yesterday. I don't really like it, as it'll definitely end up being shortened to Clem which reminds me of "clammy".

Of your choices, my preference would be Roscoe, although it'll be tricky if you couldn't live with the nn Ross. Gilbert is OK.

Florian is a bit too feminine for my liking. If you like the -ian ending, how about Julian, Simeon, Gideon?

Others you might like are: Laurence, Edmund, Wilfred, Peter.

I like them, but youre pretty brave asking for opinions on names here. I have seen most of my kids names slated on here on other peoples threads. They can go fuck themselves obviously, but it does sting a bit.

Gilbert is one of my ds' middle names.

Not keen on any of them. Too frilly or something. just give out a fussy sort of vibe. Old fashioned, but not in a good way.

I know girls with nicknames of Clem and Clemmie.

Clement is the best of the lot for me.

Not hugely keen on Astrid either, but it's OK. Just a bit harsh sound for my taste.

I love Clement and Gilbert! Clarence is great too. Not so keen on Roscoe though.

Clement or Clemence is nice. Not keen on the rest tho. Astrid reminds me of asteroid flying in space. Or the Astrid from how to train your Dragon. She'll be Nick named Dragon at school cos all kids know the
cartoon. Up to you though. Whatever floats your boat.

They don't get the fear they are just giving their opinion. Clearly if lots of people liked these names they would be in the top 10.
If you want a very unusual name for your children then accept it won't be to everyone's taste.
Personally I think they are ok. Actually I think I like Roscoe the best.

Come on OP. You can't ask opinions about a pretty niche set of names and not expect some pretty honest/vigorous replies.

Better to hear them now rather than when little Clement or Clarence is toddling around.

Clarence in True Romance is far from wet, and I know a v v cool Roscoe who DJs, amongst other things, v talented guy
