DH bought up the subject of girls names yesterday. For dd we discussed Connie as a possibility. He loves it I'm not sure. It's too much of a nickname. He refuses to have Contance on the BC. Also she would have to have a middle name and I'm completely stuck for anything that goes with either.

Do any of you know any Connies? Is it also short for anything else? What are their siblings called?

My other reservations are that neither really go with dd's name and there would be alliteration with our surname which I'm not sure about either.

It's because Gregory is my first choice for a boy. It fits the same criteria as dd. Works here and with our background.

Lol at Errol! I vetoed Dana which was one of his helpful suggestions last time!

I feel you mrsnec. All my name choices are because I liked the character. DH is just as bad - he's lobbying for a son called Errol atm.

Well that's certainly more in keeping with where we live but it hadn't occurred to me. I hear the male version all the time. In fact my consultant is Constantinos but the others I've met would shorten that to Dino or Dina here.

Not keen on Caroline. Do agree about Carrie Bradshaw though. And we definitely are influenced by fictional characters. I think Casualty started this whole thing off for Dh.

Carrie is traditionally short for Caroline, but Ms Bradshaw seemed to cement it as an a-ok stand alone first name.

Oh yes, Konnie Huq.it is alright with a K but still not as a first name and I'm going off Constance now too. Saw a trailer for Lady Chatterley yesterday so now I'm thinking it's a bit period drama!

Not considered Carrie. On its own again it's too much of a nickname. What is it short for?

Dd's name has at least 5 different diminutives and I love that about it even though the most common one is hideous.

I love Connie. I know a divine ten year old Constance, who is sometimes called Connie, and I have a friend who is Connie-short-for-Concepta, which is not unusual for older Irish women (especially ones born around the feast of the Immaculate Conception! She hates her full name, but never uses it. Most people assume Connie is short for Constance.) And yes to whatever other Irish poster said Con and Connie are not unusual for older Irish men as short forms of Cornelius.

I'm pretty certain that the child called Connemara isn't Irish. As someone else said, it would be like calling your offspring West Midlands or Hampshire.

Would Carrie work? LOVE Carrie, but can give or take Connie. Only one I know of is Konnie Huq.

Consuela is a bit too Latin for us!

It sounds like Constance will sit better with dd's name so I might have to work on that with dh.

I'd never thought of Connie as being masculine either!

And I definitely prefer it with a shorter middle name. Elizabeth is my middle name and I'm not keen on it.

Now my reservation is that there is no letter c in the alphabet here so it would often be written with a k. With dd I tried to give her a name that was written and pronounced the same in both languages and I managed it but it's very restrictive but still I'm not sure about the k thing.

I like Connie as a name even though I don't like the only actual Connie I know lol. It's also a boys name here too though, used as a nickname for Conor, Cornelius , Conrad, those kind of names.

Only know one Connie - short for Constance. Sisters are called Arabella and Tabitha

I'm 34 weeks and if we have a girl she will be Connie (short for Constance), my older dd is Jessie after my grandmother and my gm had a ds called Connie so it means a lot to us. The middle name is Elizabeth for my older dd and this one will be too.

Mothership, it's a real name - i think it's the feminine form of Cornelius. I know an adult Cornelia who is very beautiful and elegant.

Thanks everyone, Irish, your list is a little bit more to my taste. Dd's middle name is on that list.

I do tend to see middle names as being more important than others might. Firstly both my inlaws use their middle names because they hate their first names. They also deliberately gave dh a very common very boring middle name in case he felt the same! My parents gave db and I their first names as our middle names and I always felt it was a cop out.

I also keep reading about children wanting to change their names and know a 5 year old that did it so I want to get it right. Dh would argue I put far too much thought into it last time!

And I'm ok with prissy! Dd's name is very prissy so maybe Connie does go with it. I quite like Cornelia too so will run that past him.

I know a little Connie (short for Constance) who is very sweet, and another baby with Constance as a middle name. I think it's sweet as a nickname but not sure about it as the full name on the birth certificate for some reason. You could also use Cornelia if your DH isn't keen on Constance? I think that's a lovely name too, if a bit frillier than Constance.

Dear Jesus no not Connemara, it's like naming them Thoroughbred, Shetland or Shire. Or Gaeltacht/Midlands if you look at it from the region association.

Connie is nice, quite simple and pretty. Middle names - not used much really are they? So make it whatever you like.
