Hi,

We've finally got a shortlist, and I thought I'd see what people here thought Smile Please can you let me know if there are any you particularly like on my lists? I like classic names but preferably not very common (I live in south East London and lots of Harry's, Isabelle's and Leo's).

Madeleine
Beatrix
Genevieve
Neve/Neave
Isabelle

Alexander
Sebastian

Thanks so much

I would go with Genevieve and Alexander, for short it would be Viva and Sandy (the Scottish nn for Alexander).

Dixiebell · 11/08/2015 15:57

Only ones I think are not common are Beatrix and Genevieve. I prefer Beatrix out of those two. Neve is lovely (I'd go for that rather than the Irish spelling which would have to be spelt out), but is v. close to Eve/Evie/Ava etc. etc. which abound. Madeleine and Isabelle in all their variations are pretty common. As are Alexander and Sebastian. Lovely names, but don't think you'd get your not too common criteria.

Genevieve and Alexander x

SmugairleRoin · 10/08/2015 20:35

Don't like Beatrix at all.

Niamh is fine, good but not particularly great.

Orangeisthenewbanana · 10/08/2015 20:23

Genevieve and Alexander are both on our shortlist!

I love Isabelle but would never use it as I know loads. Madeleine I also love but unfortunately can never quite shake the McCann connection Sad. Neve is also nice.

Not really keen on Beatrix or Sebastian.

Totality22 · 09/08/2015 20:12

Beatrix and Alexander

Beatrix (Bea)

Alexander

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/08/2015 18:47

A lovely list.

Alexander and Sebastian are both lovely.

Your girls names are great with the exception of Neve/Niamh

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 09/08/2015 18:39

Madeleine or Isabelle for girl.
Sebastian for a boy.

Queazy · 09/08/2015 16:59

Thanks so much all. It's given me loads of food for thought!

Genevieve for a girl.
Not keen on Sebastian, and would only use Alexander with nn Xander or Sandy. Just personal preference though.

Hoodedmoron · 09/08/2015 08:37

Madeleine (although not mad about Maddy, maybe Della?!) or Beatrix nn Bea for a girl

Alexander for a boy nn Sandy

MummyPig24 · 09/08/2015 08:31

Madeleine or Beatrix
Sebastian

AltoPalo · 09/08/2015 08:23

Beatrix (nn Bea and not Trixie)
Alexander (nn Sacha or Sandy but Alex is OK too)

Queazy · 09/08/2015 08:19

My DH has unexpectedly veto'd Madeleine...he said he liked it before Hmm My favourites are Alexander, nn Alex and Beatrix or Niamh now I think. I agree with all points about Isabelle/Isobel etc, and tho I said I didn't want a hugely common name, in practice I just don't like many boys names and it's the common ones I seem to like Blush

I'd definitely go for Alex nn - I knew one Sandy when younger, and never met a Xander so hoping this is the typical nn as Mrs Hathaway says.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I don't like Seth or Conrad - not sure what's wrong with me when it comes to boys names. They just sound harsh to me.

I think Alexanders are Alex by default unless you put a lot of effort in to be Xander. I don't think that should put you off.

MrsHathaway · 08/08/2015 22:30

I think Niamh is pretty well known nowadays that it wouldn't cause too much confusion. There's just the issue that lots of people have used Other Spellings - but an Isobel/Isabelle/Isabel would have that problem as would Catherine/Kathryn and so on.

ChilliAndMint · 08/08/2015 22:19

I'm not a fan of Sebastian or Alexander, do you like Seth?

BlueChampagne · 08/08/2015 22:18

If you want something not very common, I'd ditch Alexander, Sebastian, Isabelle and Beatrice. Niamh is good; how about Conrad for a boy? Classic yet unusual.

GoooRooo · 08/08/2015 22:12

Beatrix and Alexander

I particularly like Bea and Xander as nicknames

lunalovegood84 · 08/08/2015 22:11

I like Niamh, Genevieve and Alexander.

ashesandfire · 08/08/2015 21:54

I love Madeleine and Genevieve. Beatrix never did anything for me. Niamh not Neve is OK. Isobel is beautiful but a bit boring now.
Love Alexander nn Alex - not a fan of Xander.
