What about Eilidh if you like a Scottish first name? Eilidh Rae sounds nice (and FWIW, my DFs family came from the Shetlands where Rae was a family name given to a boy in every branch of the family)

Ivy Rae is absolutely beautiful.

I cant have Ivy for family reasons, and I can't have Rae because, I know of 6 girls born this year and have used Rae as the middle name (including 2 cousins!!) so you are welcome :)

My dh has both Rays and Raes in his family. Rae is a female form (at least according to Behind the Name) as are Ramona and Raylene for Raymond. I like Ramona :)

For the OP I don't think it's just Isla Ray that's not good, I think Isla Hall isn't ideal either. Isla's a bit tricky, too word sounding I think.

Poppy is also surely very popular though? Or perhaps it's passed it's peak?

Elsie is pretty, and nice to acknowledge both sides of the family I think. Elsie Ray Hall could work, or Elisabeth of course - if you like Olivia because it's 'proper' then I'd not choose a cutsie sort of name for your second dd.

OP if you do really like Isla Rae but want to avoid the IRA issue, how about Ayla Rae? Sounds the same but with the different spelling your brain doesn't make the same jump. To me, anyway.

I have loved the name Rose forever. Couldn't give a stuff if others think it is naff and boring.

Amongst my three kids I've seen some cracking comments on their names. Especially Rose and one of the first names (it is ugly and clunky and had bad associations you see).

I just see it as a sign of my clearly vastly superior taste

FWIW, I like May but less keen on Mae. I hate hyphens unless v traditional like Anne-Marie. So there is some hope for me.

Yes, I think the OP's comment was rude and a bit strange given her 'small minded' remark earlier.

I was just trying to clarify to cover myself in case my comment offended anyone, too. I'm glad if it didn't.

I wasn't specifically responding to anyone commenting on Rose on this thread. TBH I hadn't seen it. It was just a light hearted comment about the slating 'filler' middle names get. I have been told in all seriousness that having one damages your life chances.

Susan, you didn't but the Op did re May which is bloody rude IMO. It's such a horrid word and not necessary. It was not aimed at you. I didn't see the original comment re Rose.

I am not worried personally, just think that it was a very rude and unnecessary comment by the Op.

Rae as a middle name is fine - I initially thought you would have it as a hyphenated first name. I love Isla and think to stick Mae, Rae, Jane or any other add-on would just spoil it.

I didn't say Rose and May were chavvy. just very very ubiquitous as middle names because they are pretty and go with everything.

I love both of them actually.

I was going to comment but since I clearly have 'chavvy' tendencies by naming one of my DDs with May as a middle name, I clearly am not qualified.

OP A further thought - why not simply follow the example of the much-loved Scottish politician Baroness Janet Ray Michie*, and use 'Ray' (spelled that way) as a middle name for your daughter?

Baroness Michie was always known by her middle name. No-one would have dreamed of calling it - or her - 'chavvy' (dreadful word).

Poppy Rachel? Pretty + classic. Or Rachel Isla?

I also like Ailsa (another 'island' name) as an alternative to Isla.
