I have an almost 5 yr old DD called Imogen Elizabeth. Expecting a baby boy in September and so far the only name I like is Jude. Perhaps Jude Alexander. Made the mistake of telling people it was a possibility, especially family and while a handful have said 'love it' others have said 'that's a girls name' or 'do you want him to be bullied?'

Do you think id be burdening him with a name that will attract negative attention? Or if you just don't like it, is it because you don't particularly care for the name?

Honest options very welcome!

There is a Jude at my DSs nursery, he is a lovely, well behaved, happy little boy. I really like the name.

I love it. It was my choice for DS1 but DH 'won' because he was convinced I wanted Jude because of Jude Law.

Still enjoying the obscure comments Smile. That's the first thing that springs to my mind also. I also think it's an incredibly ugly name for a boy or a girl, it just sounds awful IMO. I know a female Jude who is 60+ and a male Jude who is 40+, no little kids although if MN is to be believed they are springing up left, right and centre!

Love it! Am in the process of trying to convince my husband to call our next baby due in 7 months Jude!!!

We don't really need spoiler alerts for C19 classics, but I agree and don't want to spoil it for Happy and anybody else who's about to read after this thread Grin Though I can't say which part I reflect most on now, but will say it is connected to the beginning and ambitions (too cryptic!)

I don't like it for three reasons.

Because of the dreadful associations with Jude The Obscure.

The reason St Jude is the patron saint of lost causes is that people used to confuse him with the traitor Judas Iscariot, so he became a last resort.

It's a bit on the feminine side because of the similarity to Judith/Judy.

Great name. I know a couple of boy Judes and noone ever thinks they are girls or bullies them.

Isn't Jude the patron saint of lost causes? And of course there's Jude the Obscure, which may be one of the most depressing books I've ever read.

Yes, you should read it, Happy! One of my favourite Hardy books, very thought provoking, if utterly bleak. But, ah, poor Jude!

Happymummyone Jude´s a good book, but quite harrowing. If you haven´t read it already, I recommend Thomas Hardy´s, "Far From The Madding Crowd"; it´s my favourite of his novels and there´s also a cracking film adaptation with Julie Christie as the badass main character.

Love it, it was River Phoenix's Middle name, named after the Beetles song. I had a dog called Jude many years ago.

Jude is a lovely name but I've never read the book so don't know any connections.

I couldn't do it. Jude the Obscure has haunted me all my life ever since I read it as a teenager. I saw a movie of it in 1996 or so that has added to the nightmares. Those poor children. But if it doesn't have those connections for you OP then I guess you could go for it. But any child I meet with the name Jude conjures up images of sadness and sorrow and loss for me. Sorry.

It's risen in popularity recently but isn't massively popular if that makes sense at all? It's just gone from relatively unused, to top 100 as opposed to barrelling into the top 10 and being ubiquitous. It's still not overused imo. I know 4 under 5. 2 girls, 2 boys. I suppose there's a tiny danger of it being a bit faddy as it's suddenly on the radar. Or dating a child to a certain time. However, their age does that anyway, so it's not really a problem Grin

It's a fab name and the ones I know are all lovely.

Yes, Gabriel is good if you're a Hardy fan. Or Angel (Clare - maybe not)
