Hey all, due in a few weeks and we are naming our son Atlas Isaiah. My only concern is that I don't want to choose a name that's too popular/becomes popular!
When I named my daughter Ava ten years ago, there were no other Ava's around-now they're everywhere! Same happened with my son Sonny 8 years ago!
I know it shouldn't matter but I'm just curious.....
Thank you :)

All I am picturing is a geography teacher saying "right everybody go and grab an atlas"

And every single joker in the classroom grabbing your son. Confused

Quasilulu · 02/08/2015 22:59

Ooh the Mumsnet bitches are in full force over this one! Well done OP. Grin Personally think it's not as ridiculous as Atticus which due to its literary provenance is loved on here.

Only1scoop · 02/08/2015 22:45

The two names together sound like a shelf search in a library.

woodhill · 02/08/2015 22:42

Please don't do it

Only1scoop · 02/08/2015 22:37

Surname as in Charles

atticusclaw · 02/08/2015 22:33

I think a pp has hit the nail on the head, the vast majority of people will think you've named your son after a book of maps.

If you're fine with that then fine. Personally I wouldn't be.

Marcipex · 02/08/2015 22:29

None at all.

FrozenYogurt · 02/08/2015 22:21

I know an Atlas!! His parents call him Atty for short too. It suits him.

SpendSpendSpend · 02/08/2015 22:15

Most people will know it as something you buy from the garage when you are lost or are old fashioned and cant use a sat nav.

Hardly anyone will know the greek god meaning behind it.

All his life he will get people saying "your named after a book with road maps in?"

Babynamelist · 02/08/2015 22:08

I actually know of one baby Atlas. I think he must be about 2 now. Haven't met another one.

AlmaMartyr · 02/08/2015 20:00

I don't know any. Cool name :) We used something in a sinilar vein for one of our DCs and I am so glad we did.

Smartleatherbag · 02/08/2015 19:58

It's mumsnet, not netmums.

Smartleatherbag · 02/08/2015 19:56

Yeah, thanks holmes, for explaining that. Of course people know that, you patronising fool.

sebsmummy1 · 02/08/2015 19:10

We're on the Baby Naming board full stop, that's enough in itself to get most names posted on here a flaming.

I tried to sneak the name Eugene past and the results weren't pretty Shock

We're on the MN baby name board... of course we are all familiar with Greek mythology Grin

NerrSnerr · 02/08/2015 19:00

I don't know any. I can imagine geography lessons and jokes about the weight of the world becoming quite annoying for him quite quickly.

Kasey86 · 02/08/2015 18:59

I also don't think it's that outlandish, I've met a boy called Tarquonian (not a typo and not called Tarquin for short) and a little girl called Sequoia. I also know of a little boy called Yellow Hmm

Kasey86 · 02/08/2015 18:57

It's not to my taste, but I like the story behind the meaning :). If you love it then go for it.

holmessweetholmes · 02/08/2015 18:50

The people being all snarky and ho ho about it being a big book of maps, did you not know it was a name from ancient mythology? Names of Greek and Roman gods seem pretty popular. And it's a range of mountains. Place names are also quite popuIar. haven't met any Atlases, but I don't think it's that outlandish.

ShadowStar · 02/08/2015 18:48

I don't think there's much need to worry about it rocketing in popularity so you're safe there.

CurlsLDN · 02/08/2015 18:45

I don't know any, but I really like it

marinacortina · 02/08/2015 18:45

Poor boy will have the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Highlandbird · 02/08/2015 18:42

Don't know any but I love it, and the meaning behind why you've chosen it! Smile

drudgetrudy · 02/08/2015 18:41

I don't think there's any chance of Atlas going up in popularity like Ava.
