Adeline

Asked DS (5) what he wanted to call his baby sister and he comes up with Adeline (pronounced A-duh-line). Have NO idea where it's from. Asked him to repeat it in case i'd misheard or he meant to say something else but he just said it again.

I actually really like it but would have gone for something "classic". Would she hate me for it when she's 15??

I think (not 100%) but wasn't there a character called Adeline in a Peter Carey novel? Maybe that's the Aussie connection or that it sounds a bit like Adelaide.

wafflyversatile · 03/08/2015 01:53

Adeline was introduced to England by the Normans in the eleventh century, was very common during the Middle Ages, then vanished until the Victorian Gothic revival. Not classic enough? :p

Adeline is the American pronunciation. French pronunciation is Adeleen.

The one I know is pronounced Adeleen.

aoife24 · 03/08/2015 01:02

For some reason it sounds Australian to me, I hear it said with an Australian accent.

CarlaJones · 03/08/2015 00:57

Maybe he saw an ad for The Age of Adeline film on tv?
I really like the name Adeline.

Adeline: the answer to your haemorrhoidsGrin

Mulled it over and it's now on the possible list: we'll need to see what DD looks like when she's born. It's going to be Annie, Adeline or Erin.

Ds still can't explain where he got it from!!!

I like it - your son has good taste! Mine is the same age and he wants to call his baby sister poo poo.

itsbetterthanabox · 02/08/2015 06:49

It's a great name

IsItMeOrIsItHotInHere · 02/08/2015 06:38

I have no idea why Adelaide and Adeline have both become so popular. I think they are really ugly sounding, and old fashioned but not in a good way.

CarrotCakeMuffins · 02/08/2015 06:35

Love it. Reminds me of Adeline Yen Mah, author of Falling Leaves and other books. An inspirational woman who despite her abusive childhood in China, fought hard to make a success of herself.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 01/08/2015 22:39

Love it and don't all DDs hate you when they're 15?

mummytime · 01/08/2015 22:36

I love it, it was my Great Grandmother's real name (lots mistakenly seemed to think it was Adelaide). I might have used it if...

LaurieMarlow · 01/08/2015 22:28

I absolutely love it. Gorgeously old school.

Reminds me of the dim daughter in 'Bread', Aveline: 'I do modelling...' Grin

Ally1234 · 01/08/2015 19:40

I don't like it. It sounds like a prescription drug.
Totally agree with this sorry.
Madeleine's a bit better but still not a fan x

I love it. Also love Adélie (dh hated it unfortunately).

thanksamillion · 01/08/2015 14:59

My DD is Adelina pronounced A-de-leen-a. It does get mis-heard as Angelina quite a bit at school which she finds annoying but otherwise it's had very positive comments.

scatterthenuns · 01/08/2015 14:42

I don't like it. It sounds like a prescription drug.

puremuscle · 01/08/2015 14:41

I think it's beautiful and it is a v traditional name even thought it is not as popular as classics like Elizabeth or Catherine.
