Hi, I'm new but need brutally honest opinions on potential names for our latest addition due in sept... Other children are Arthur, Florence and Cecily and hubby and I can't agree on new name, we don't know sex but my fave boys names are Ernest, Bertram (Bertie) and Lionel...

Please help! Thank you ????

Ernest is lovely :)

puremuscle · 01/08/2015 14:55

I like you other children's names but I'm not keen on any of those possibilities.

Betram/ Bertie sounds really wet.
Not keen on either Lionel.
I don't mind Ernest too much but it seems too Importance of being Earnest with a sister called Cecily.

I much prefer some of the other suggestions on here such as: Lawrence, Edward/ Edmund/ Henry/ Leonard or Leopold/ Gilbert but not sure whether you wanted other options or not.

megarobotdiscoparty · 01/08/2015 13:25

Ernest must be on the upswing - 2.5 years ago when I was following threads on the name it got a majority slagging off, now people mostly seem to like it! Kinda hope it's not the next big thing.

Ernest from your list OP but I am biased!

Neednewflowers · 31/07/2015 13:21

Eli would go with your other names.

marshallzumarubble · 31/07/2015 11:33

I disagree that these names will invite bullying. To start with, there are so many names in use now, many more than in the past. Also, I know three Berties under the age of 3 and we are in East Yorkshire so hardly cosmopolitan!

I like Lionel and think it will come back massively within the next 5-10 years.

I prefer Albert for Bertie (then you get Albie as well) but Bertram is fine.

I love Ernest and I know one who shortens to Ness which is a nice alternative to Ernie.

GoooRooo · 31/07/2015 10:46

My DS has Ernest as a middle name (after DH's grandfather). I hated it at first but I got to choose the first name so gave in and it's grown on me. I like Ernie too.

I like Bertie but not Betram.

Lionel is awful.

barbecue · 31/07/2015 10:35

Ernest

Neednewflowers · 31/07/2015 06:45

Florence, Cecily and George
Florence, Cecily and Peter
Florence, Cecily and Magnus
Florence, Cecily and Ludo.
Ernest and Lionel are awful. They just don't go with your girls names.

Agree Arthur is good as is Hector, Woody, James, Henry, Otto, Rex.

Goodbyemylove · 31/07/2015 03:58

They are really awful names. What kind of person do you want him to be? The poor kid.

I know it depends what type of circles you mix in but he would go through hell in an average comp with such a wet name.

IsItStupid · 31/07/2015 03:46

Arthur, Florence and Cecily are nice.

From you DC4 names I like Ernest the best. I like the name, it makes me think of Ernest Rutherford. I'm not quite so keen on Ernie though, do you have a nickname in mind?

Lionel I don't like but I think that is a personal association from my past that makes me think that way as opposed to the name itself.

Bertram is okay but I would never choose it myself, iyswim.

CheerfulYank · 31/07/2015 03:41

Bertram.
Lionel is ok.

Hate Ernest.

FastWindow · 31/07/2015 02:54

Poshest list ever!

Assuming the dc will move in those circles then -
Job
Jory/Jonty
Rupert
Archibald (although Archie v used atm)
Toby
Simeon
Geoffrey (god help the child)
Jerry.

nooka · 31/07/2015 02:46

I think having a Cecily and an Ernest is a bit much really, however much you may love The Importance of Being Ernest!

I suspect it's probably the most mainstream of a decidedly unmainstream list! Personally I don't like Bertram (or Bert) or Lionel.

I prefer Leonard/Lenny or Barnaby/Barney

Perhaps you should go the whole hog and opt for Algernon Grin

HerRoyalNotness · 31/07/2015 02:42

Ernest nn Erns

CheezyBlasters · 31/07/2015 02:35

Bertram is lovely.

Now got bloody maurice song stuck in head, thanks remus, grr.

Quasilulu · 31/07/2015 02:24

Lionel is grim.

MadameJosephine · 30/07/2015 21:46

Love Ernest, don't like the others sorry.

I quite like Bertie but would go for Albert rather than Bertram and I think Albert I think goes better with you other children's names too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/07/2015 21:40

Maurice?

MaudeTheMopLady · 30/07/2015 21:40

I like Ernest!
Other thoughts:

Lucian
Ned
Percy
Stanley
Victor
Willoughby

Love your other dc names!

reuset · 30/07/2015 21:33

Lionel might sound nicer in french I agree, but it has a dated image there too nowadays.

Neednewflowers · 30/07/2015 21:33

Malcolm?

loveliesbleeding1 · 30/07/2015 21:05

Glad I didn't offend, (secretly hope you choose Lenny now).Grin

Porkpienessie · 30/07/2015 20:25

No, I'm not joking. I know some of my choices are a itouch 'out there' for some nevertheless thanks for your honesty!

loveliesbleeding1 · 30/07/2015 20:16

The french way to say lionel is nicer.

loveliesbleeding1 · 30/07/2015 20:14

I think you are joking, well, I hope you are, dreadful names.
Bert sounds too similar to burp.
Lionel is awful.
lenny would be marginally better.
