Can I call my daughter Dorothy?

Opinions on the name Dorothy nn Dottie

To go with siblings Charlie and Tilly.

Love the meaning of Dorothy, 'gift of god' and she would be a gift as we have lost two babies.

Dorothy is lovely, was a strong contender for my first dd. We liked Dorothy May or Dorothy Alice. I think it's exactly the same type of name as Rosemary although Dorothy is prettier to me. Dh preferred Dorothea, I preferred Dorothy.

I'd say Dorothy is a generation older than Rosemary (it is in my family!). I think it's really nice, but not keen on Dottie, personally.

I like it. Dorothy or Dorothea also be shortened to Dora.
Dorothy Parker is a fun namesake too!

I can't see any similarity between Dorothy and Rosemary at all. To me they aren't the same "type" of name. I actually think Rosemary is a very pretty name but Dorothy is more like Gertrude, Gladys, Maud, Mavis etc.- a not very pretty old lady name.

I don't think of Dorothy or Rosemary as little old lady names. And when we named our DD (19 years ago) there were very few "old-fashioned" names around. Most baby girls we knew at the time were named Jessica, Chloe, Sophie, Gemma, Hannah, Rebecca, Georgia and so on, with the occasional Daisy or Maisie thrown in!

I really don't think anyone under middle age will care about 'friend of Dorothy ' any more. I mean, aren't young people a bit beyond needing euohamisms for gay? Anyway, the gay man is the 'friend 'not the Dorothy. Judy Garland reference.

I like both Dorothy and Dorothea. I don't find them plain in the slightest. I can't see the slightest problem in the friend of Dorothy association, which comes from Judy Garland being supposedly a favourite singer of gay men, surely?

I prefer Dorothea and it doesn't matter if she's called Thea if your DS is Theo as she may well be called and you can call her Dottie.

I know a 2yo called Dotty. Think it's fine for a youngster but can't picture an adult with the name.
