Help with my stupid surname.

My surname is stupid. It is the noise a dog makes... but not Bark. The other one, the more stupid one.

Don't know what sex we're having and don't know where to start. Everything sounds ridiculous to me, DH & my names included. Bloody comedy surname.

What doesn't sound ridiculous with Woof?

Woof is cool! I went to school with cousins whose surnames were Fox and Wolf. I really wanted to be part of their gang. DH's cousins are the Ramsbottoms. Very glad mil didn't insist on double barrelling that one...

I think Woof is a cool surname. It sounds German to me.

I think a good strong first name is best. I knew someone with a similar surname with a first name of Lawrence - I don't particularly like Lawrence but it was very effective at 'neutralising' the surname.

I've googled - there are a few Woofs around Wink

I don't think it's necessary to consider the surname when choosing a first name unless extreme circumstances, like it makes an offensive word. yours is fine and I don't think you should let it dictate your choice. Just pick a name you love :)

He had a one syllable name so perhaps he felt that the alternate pronunciation made it sound better!

For what it's worth I think Dennis needs a revival but yes definitely a longer name would sound good . I don't think it's a bad surname either , just unusual which is never a bad thing.

The multi-syllable approach is a good one, I think. You don't want Fred Woof, you want Sebastian Woof - that sort of thing.

I used to work with one who insisted it wasn't pronounced the same as the dog noise!

Apparently it rhymes with 'hoof' or 'tooth'.

On the subject of baby names, I'd agree with the previous poster who suggested longer names, although something that is less likely to be shortened to one syllable would be preferable.

I think woof is fine. Marginally notable but not truly silly.

My friend is called xxxx Short, and she is. I went to school with a Xxxx Dick , I know a Xxxxx Hore. I really don't think Woof is bad. Oh I also had a friend called xxxx Wolf.

Choose a name you like and stand proud!
