Definitely want a welsh name, any thoughts on shortlist?

I'm so jealous of your list-but even more jealous of your own name,Angharad is my all time number one girl's name!

Our DS3 is named Ianto, so I'll throw that on the pile! We're from North East England but moved to Cardiff several years ago, always wanted a Welsh name for one of our kids as I'm Welsh.

I really like Emrys for a boy, from your list along with Idris, Ianto, Ieuan and Gareth.

Nesta is interesting but very pretty. Another vote for Eleri here too
I had a great aunt Eira which I thought was a lovely name, it means snow I believe.

I am another non-Welsh person who loves Welsh names. I grew up on the borders with Wales so had a lot of Welsh-named school friends. Names I love: Bethan (I have one of these - she has no Welsh heritage - oops!), Eleri, Catrin, Ceryn, Rhiannon, Arianwen, Gruff (I agonised about whether we could get away with this for a boy in England). Some of these might be too common in Wales though?

I like Siriol. Or Saran. For a girl. Quite easy to pronounce.

Sioned is nice too, if people can pronounce it properly.

Some friends have a little boy called Llewelyn. Even his parents can't pronounce it! He gets called "Loo"....

I'm a Sian I hated it when I was younger as no one could say it, but very different now as more popular so people do know how to say it.

My Dad is welsh and I'm pregnant with my first and I like the idea of a welsh name for my first child. Carys is on my list, love it!

I have an Emrys. Think that it is a great name.
Hate Enfys, had a Great Aunt Enfys. I have never met anyone with a nice word to say about her. She was a complete bitch!

My favourite is Arianwen, but I'm biased as that's my DD's name! Love Ceridwen as well, and Aneira. I was going to suggest Eirlys but see someone has beaten me to it! But you're the right time of year for it.

Boys, I love Emrys also Taliesin or Idris as suggsted by a PP (unless Idris Elba has made it too popular?)

Heledd, Aderyn and Taliesin are lovely. I love Idris too even if it reminds me of Idris from Satellite City. Though he was lovely too.

I love Gruffydd/Gruff, I really like Macsen for a boy.

I love Gwenan, Deryn and Elin for a girl. I love Carys but it's really popular.

I'd go for Arianwen and Aneirin - I know a lovely boy nn NYE. I love Arianwen, always have but am not welsh!

If you're Angharad you may all have A names which puts some people off.

I know an Eleri but it's mostly pronounced like celery which bothers her parents so may be annoying if you move.

Eleri is really pretty. I like Teleri too.

Our DD is due in 3 weeks, and we've gone for Eleri. I absolutely love it. English friends/family are a bit by the choice, but oh well! If we ever had another DD, we would go for Anwen.

My fantasy Welsh children are called Elin, Carys and Rhodri.

Of your list, l like Aneira, Anreirin and Emrys.

Aderyn means bird - would be nice as a name

I know it's a controversial one on mn, but some Welsh names are popular with those with no Welsh heritage at all in England (I'm in south east)
Lots of little Dylan, Owen (slightly older), Seren and Carys round by me. Lots of non Irish using Irish names too.
I think it's quite nice really but I know others disagree.

Oh and Idris Elba is called Idrissa but I guess he shortened it at some point

I love the majority of these name, and love welsh names in general. Sadly we have no welsh heritage at all so only dared a Dylan - though why that's acceptable for non-welsh people to use, as is Seth, but Gwylim isn't, I don't know. There is one at work who is Scottish and I don't think Idris Elba is entirely welsh?

Wow, you are so lucky being able to use Welsh names OP! I have Welsh heritage, but DH vetoed every Welsh name I suggested.

I LOVE all of your girls list, several were on my shortlist, along with Tirion, which had to be dropped due to GoT. Also on my list were Aderyn, Adara, Aelwen and Eirwen.

Also love most of your boys list, just ambivalent about Seth. My favourite is Osian and I'm another one who is a HUGE fan of Taliesin.

Seth is Biblical, and therefore Hebrew. A lot of Biblical, particularly Old Testament, names used to be popular in Wales due to the influence of nonconformism.

(My favourite name of a haulage firm from donkey's years ago - Tyssul Ebenezer. In your face, Norbert Dentressangle!)

Anwen is actually a fairly recently devised name, but it's a combination of the traditional elements An- (which in names is usually an intensifier, so Angharad is from *An-carata = much-loved) and -wen (originally a suffix applied to women's names meaning 'blessed', implying that they were very holy women or saints, so original name Cain (beautiful) + wen = Ceinwen).

Might be worth trawling through lists of Welsh saints' names and Welsh literature - the Pengwern cycle of poems (Heledd, Llywarch Hen), the Gododdin, the medieval tales, etc.

Heledd (dd is a voiced th, the sound at the start of the words 'the' or 'thee') is lovely - a friend of mine brought up a daughter of that name in
SE England without too many problems.

I would love to have called a daughter Ffreuer, after one of Heledd's sisters in the Pengwern cycle, but having an English family-in-law couldn't have coped with her being called Fryer / Friar.

Ohh I forgot to add Idris and Teilo.
