Rupert - honest opinions, please!

I really like the name Rupert, but my hubby thinks it sounds a bit 'overheard in Waitrose'! I can see his point, but I also think it's a good traditional name that will work well with his older sister's name (Martha) and sounds good on a boy and a man. However, I'd hate to think it would lead to bullying in the playground.

What do people honestly think? Thank you!!!

I'll expose myself as a proper pleb now. It never even occurred to me that croquet was a sport that people actually competed in. I thought it was just a gentle pastime that posh people partook of on a summer's day in between eating cucumber sandwiches and getting up to hi jinx with the under gardener.

My parents have a vair posh friend who knows the rules of croquet. He is now retired and spends a lot of time on his lawn.Grin

Fraggle, I assure you I'm equally peasant-y! You get a blue or half-blue for competing at a high level in Oxford and Cambridge sports teams, including in a varsity match. You get a stripy blazer, glory etc. I remember that Rupert because he was the only person I know who actually knew the rules of croquet, while the rest of us invented them/cheated/played drunk so it didn't count etc.

His children are Luke and Liberty. I think you can safely say Rupert isn't their taste. Grin

Thanks again for your posts. Hubby just said he imagines George Osbourne would call his child something like Rupert, which has just utterly killed it for me now!

The only Rupert I knew was reading PPE, had swishy corn-coloured locks, would inherit a considerable chunk of the North of England, and had a half-blue in croquet.

i know a Bear or a "Bear Bear" whose real name is Rupert.

It would pass the park test for me because I'd probably use Roo (or Rue) for that purpose.

Thanks, everyone. Some of the replies in the 'no' camp made me chuckle! Hadn't realised the squaddie slang thing, and hubby says it fails the park test for him so I think we might have to go for something else. But what?!?!

My friend son is called Rupert , I like it even though it still brings the bear to my mind . They call him Rups ,and I think it's very sweet.

If you like it GO for it !!!!! There will be ones that like it and the others that not so much ! Like with everything else in this word Smile

I know a rupert about 18 months old.
And I have seen a newborn rupert.
I think it is making a start at being trendy!
I don't think I would have a rupert, but if you like it,it's fine. It would look like we copied...
At least you know it's a boy name, not like a lot of trendy unisex ones.

I love it, a really cool guy I grew up with. That said, even now years later I always think "Roo's a poo" after one of my other really cool teenage mates taught Rupert's parrot to say it when he was holiday sitting it one year, lol
