Thoughts please.

This is the only name we have both agreed on so far!

DH likes: Atticus, Horatio

I like: Solomon, Gideon, Percival.

Middle name will be John for family reasons.

What do you think?

I like Evander! And actually Leander, hmmm.....

We are very 'normal' honest, we drive a Skoda, own a caravan as we can't afford to holiday abroad. DH is armed forces and 6 ft 5. This isn't going to be a little thing in stature. I work full time as a healthcare professional.

I do take the comments on board, DH is an atheist and I suspect that as Gideon seems to be conjuring images of bibles (?) that probably rules that one out.

He feels Solomon is too biblical too.

All your names sound really pretentious. I don't usually judge kids' names but if I met a child called Lysander I would assume the parents were pretentious twats trying to compensate for not being posh enough. All your choices are fucking horrendous.

We can't use John! Though I was tempted, as our surname is very short so think something like John Mob.

That sadly ruled out Hugh, Alec and Mark which otherwise would have been contenders.

TBH if you went for Alexander and used Xander from day one, I'd be surprised if it mutated into Alex. Xan maybe, as kids do tend to shorten more and more, but not something completely different.

DD has a name that has many potential shortenings We've always called her by one short version, and no-one's ever used any of the others, though it does get contracted (Not Elizabeth, but imagine Libby turning into Libs - but never changing to Beth or Eliza)

I can't get over the 'lice' thing and that to me would be the most obvious shortening - don't forget, it won't neccessarily be you who chooses the child's nickname.

Xander is pushing it a bit - as it isn't a 'z' sound. Sandy is cute though.

I like Solomon. Gideon makes me think of the bible. I like Atticus too, in theory but not sure how I'd like it in practice...

I like the name Hecate. But I think it's a girls name. And a witch. Think she got a mention in Macbeth.

I like Solomon the best of your names.

Atticus is becoming pretty common - and I don't like it I must say, especially as so many people don't realise it's context outside of TKAM.

Gideon makes me think of bibles given out at school.

Percival is VERY poncey! As is Lysander!

Not overly concerned about potential ponceyness ' I suspect it will work for our circumstances. I feel that the nicknames give potential if he feels it's a bit 'much' he can just be 'Sandy' which isn't poncey at all.

snowflake DH really wants a more unusual name, I suggested Alexander but I have a niece Alexandria nm Alex. We did consider Alexander with Xander as a nm but I wondered if 'Alex' might be inevitable? Then my parents will essentially have two grandchildren with the same name.

DD (7) has been been reading a version of Midsummer night's dream at school and referred to Lysander as 'Lasagne' throughout.

I love Atticus. Solomon/Sol is OK, if a bit...solemn. The rest are just a bit much, even for me (and I love unusual names!)

Never met a Lysander, but I do know a Leander. He hates it and goes by Leo. Smile
