Baby boy, terrible surname, any suggestions?

Hi everyone. We have just found out we are expecting a boy and are delighted, issue is my DPs surname is.... Wait for it..... Crippin..... It's so hard to think of a nice normal ish name to go with it!! Any suggestions? I like pretty traditional names, any suggestions greatly received!

I do agree with that previous post. I think we are moving away from that belief that a child automatically, always and without question has its father's name.

I think people have the confidence to question things now.

Really, don't give your child a surname you hate. You have a perfectly good one of your own, for your child, who will be registered by YOU as you are not married to your DP - give your baby your surname! - and there's nothing to stop your DP taking it too, for that matter.

Crippin is pretty horrid, and doesn't go with anything. A long name like Alexander does indeed sound better, but Alex Crippin is not great.

These were names that were in the running for DS - we settled on Lewis in the end. Just looked at him at birth and we both agreed he just looked like a Lewis

I personally don't think Crippin is that bad. And lots of names will sound nice with it

A friend of mine married a Mr Alex Dick (seriously wonder what his parents were thinking). They decided to use her name as their married name to save their kids from literally being Dicks. I thought that was eminently sensible.

Why would you give your child a name you hate?

Bit of a long shot and I hope I don't offend, but there's no law that says your baby has to have your dp's surname.
My dd has my name and my next child will also have my name. It's not negotiable,
But if you're certain the he will take his father's surname... Let me think of some ideas., because it's not the worse name in the works just hard to match.

X-posted, OP. It still seems odd that you are voluntarily giving your child a name you dislike. I love my husband and he's an extraordinary father, but I don't use his name and while our son has both surnames, mine is the one he uses.

Why would you give your child your partner's surname, especially as you hate it?

I honestly posted light heartedly as we were getting nowhere but the more I hear Alexander the more I like it, we might actually have a winner! Thank you so much, I love mumsnet!
P.s as much as I don't particularly love my DPs name I love him and he's going to be a great dad, I hope our son loves his name and the fab family he comes from so yes I could use my name but I am choosing not to. Thanks again everyone

I'm with ch1134, Philip Crippen and Nicholas Crippen sound great. My baby brain is failing me to think of any more though

The infamous Dr Crippen was Hawley Harvey Crippen, so avoid that.

I would seriously consider your own surname though.

Red dwarf - 'the' Dr Crippen was called Harvey I believe, might have been his middle name, that's also the name of our much loved dog

Another vote for using your own surname. Given that you're carrying and giving birth to him- I'm struggling to see why your nice normal name isn't good enough

I'm into sounds. I think Crippin could sound cool if you play on the 'ih' sound.
