Ethel is my husband's favourite baby name. He would have it for a first name (not going to happen).
Our other two DDs also have middle names beginning with E (Edith and Eleanor). This was just a coincidence - Edith we loved but was also the name of DH's much-loved grandmother; Eleanor just flowed best with my other DD's first name. But I sort of think that we have to continue with the E thing, and it also gets my DH off the idea of Ethel for a first name!
I actually think it's quite pretty, and I can imagine a really cool and quirky Ethel. But it's too marmite a name for us, and as our other two DDs have names conventionally thought of as pretty, it would be going too far off-piste to use it as a first name - she might hate us down the line!
