Names you don't like that are loved on here

I know a little Romilly, her mother considers herself to be rather superior so it's no real surprise. Weirdly the sibling has a very normal name, I was expecting something super pretentious when she was pregnant. Such a disappointment.

Too many to mention - and the name I called my son is very clearly on this list as being common, unoriginal and old mannish - luckily he loves his name and despite apparently being in the top five boys' names lists he doesn't have any with this same name in his friendship group apart from the dog next door. .

Henry

To me it says "horrible Henry" or Henry VIII.. Neither good associations, and I always imagine a nasty little kid with slicked back hair who loves to torture small animals (I'm really sorry to all mums of Henrys, I'm sure your child is lovely really!)

Also Benedict - harsh and ugly and try-hard to my ears.

Fwiw, Jude is the name of an apostle (from the Bible). It is most definitely a boy's name.

I have a Sullivan, I don't take offense if people don't like it, totally doesn't bother me. I have a Carter as well, that really seems to make the masses scream "American trailer park" - don't live in UK so I suppose the names aren't frowned upon as much here. Everyone likes different names, the world would be totally boring if we all liked the same thing (which evidently, lots of people do!)

I can't stand old man names - Alfie, Archie, Charlie, Harry, Stanley - I eyeroll every time I hear them because they're everywhere.
Jaden/Kaiden/Brayden - totally bastardized versions of Aiden. To be honest, I think my loathing of certain names is really because of over use. Lily. Perfectly lovely name. May/Mae. Perfectly lovely name. But Lily-Mae? Totally unimaginative. I used to love Darcey and Grace. Due to popularity I've heard them so often they now bore me.
Names mumsnet love in here that I hate? Harriet, Ottilie, Hugo, Ptolemy - basically names that I find sound totally pretentious and something that that awful sub-par "journos" katie Hopkins of Shona sibery would use.

Gretchin. It's awful and sounds like retching yet people are always suggesting it! Just no.

Many years ago I was PA to a very senior bloke who had two daughters called Penelope and Persephone. He also had three sons I think who had more mainstream names which I can't remember. However he used to refer to his girls phonetically as Pennylope and Percyphone which was probably a very affectionate Dad thing.

Neither are names I would have chosen for a DD but I cannot hear them the correct way anymore.

Nothingupsleeve - Why on earth somebody would become offended because somebody doesn't like 'their' name, or their 'child's' name, because unless they've coined the name themselves it's ridiculous.

Adding the 'yooneek' spellings of mainstream popular, or in fact any, names would qualify.

I could fill the thread with 'em.

I can't be the only one frantically checking if any of my kids names are mentioned here And yes, two of them are - although to be fair one of my kids has already decided they don't like their name and have changed it to one they do like

I must admit I considered Rowan for a girl and Arlo for a boy but they sound awful in my Glaswegian accent so I decided against them :o

I really dislike some of the pretentious names (in my opinion!) that get mentioned over and over again on here, Atticus and Aurealis seem quite popular in the land of MN yet I dont know anyone in the real world who'd actually even think of those names let alone consider or use them maybe its just because I'm council estate scruff

Elsa, Ella, Erin, Esme oh sorry should that be Esmay? Rose and any derivative of. Ditto Lily. Iris - like Lily but trying to be clever and different. Just like all the other parents of Iris. Edith, Edie, hipster shit like Nora. God fucking hell, who calls their child after Nora bleeding Batty? Cutesy, Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail and their cousins Milly, Tilly, Mollie, Kitty & Posy. And Darcy. Just no. Mae, May and Grace for middle names. Yawn. Double yawn when you tell me its a family connection as you have loads more names in the family that are a billion times better and that seems to always be the justification. I'm not buying that everyone has a grandmother or Great Grandma May or Grace.

And the Dog names for boys. Fuck me why do 90% of the boys names on MN sound like dogs. List above as an example: Rufus, Rex, Rafferty, ok Felix is a cat, Toby, Theo passes the dog test, as does Jude, Rory no, Milo no, Barnaby is a bear. And Benedict is a great big St Bernard. Why?! And yet the same people want to tell you that Bear and Wolf are not suitable as names for humans. Everyone goes on about the High Court Judge Test, but not one thinks about the even more essential Canine Dog Agility Class Test. If you shout it and it sounds like you should be at Cruffs rather than the playground, you've failed.

Oliver and Olivia, just for reminding me of Jamie Oliver and never being able to get past that.

I think its safe to say I don't have the same taste on MN...

That said I try and generally be polite to people asking about particular names and will save my vomit (tongue firmly in cheek) for threads like this one. Names are totally personal thing and I'm well aware that there are a lot of posters here who don't share taste. For that I'm somewhat grateful as it'd be boring as hell if we did anyway. Its nice we have progressed somewhat from our ancestors John and Mary.

I love Rowan as it's my favourite tree, I'd always be well disposed towards a child called Rowan, but I probably wouldn't choose it for my own DCs. Funny that there can be names you like in abstract but would never use yourself.

Not sure these are really MN names but I hate:

Grace or Gracie
May/Mae especially as a middle name
Rose as a middle name, though I like it as a first name, it's just far too over used as a middle name now.
Also don't like Jack, Harry or Freddie.
And I do know children with these names or versions of them that are lovely, I just can't get on with the names!

Oh and I do know an Arlo in real life, and I know a Romilly in the 80s. It was unusual then, I wonder how it caught on as a popular name again in MN land? Did you all know the Romilly I knew? She was very popular at school, that's for sure...
