RedToothbrush we rejected a few top 10 names as DH's surname is very common (like smith or Jones) so I would allow 'too popular' as a valid reason for not using a name.

There were plenty I like that didn't sound right with his surname, or had a negative association for us. (Eg name of an ex or something like that!). It does feel a bit like 'passing on' a good name - 'I couldn't use this but you might like it'.

The High Court Judge test makes me laugh. I've just looked up the current High Court judges and I think MNers are a bit out of date (or snobby) with what they consider to be an appropriate HCJ name. I found lots of very conventional Andrews and Richards and Carolines and Sarahs, but also:

My DD2's name is not particularly trendy right now - nowhere near top 100 - and I don't see it recommended on MN much but it's come up several times on this thread! I had no idea it was a 'MN' name nor that it was so disliked!

It wasn't a name I was totally in love with, more the case it was the name DH and I could agree on, so I don't feel offended so many dislike it, just surprised! We've had no raised eyebrows or strange looks when we've told people her name.

Old biddy names, already been listed but George, Charlie and Jack take the prize. Make me feel a bit nauseous tbh.
Also chavvy names like Lexi and Kayden, that sort of thing. Bleurgghh

My Ds' name isn't here but names that I like for any future child are!

I don't like really pretentious names - Winifred, double barrelled names - Lily-May, chavvy names - Lexy or ones with those with stupid spellings like Emmalee - the child then has to tell every person how to spell their "unique" name. Dog names bleugh! Old women/man names - therefore any relative name is out the window. I can't imagine calling a child Charles - especially if you're going to shorten it anyway! Why pick a name for the birth certificate if you're not going to use it?!

Nancy and Audrey. I normally like old fashioned 1950s school story type names. But I hate those, and they seem to be very popular on here.

I would recommend a name I didn't like on here actually. I think the thing about this section is about trying to gauge the posters tastes and come up with ideas you think THEY might like.

I find it ironic when you do look at the stats for 2013 just how few people call their children the likes of Romilly and Ottilie and Persaphone despite them being suggested all the time and posters.

And the thing I find saddest, is when people admit that they love a name but didn't have the guts to use it for whatever reason - whether it be because they regard it too popular or too out there. It you love it, and it means something to you, provided it doesn't offend or have a truly awful association or nickname just do it rather than worrying about everyone else.

It derived as a short form of the male name Judah.

It can also be used as a female name, but to say it's just a woman's name, is utter bullshit.

Alexandra, Georgina, Philippa, Leonora, Theodora pretty much any female version of a masculine name.
Most of the granny names Elsie,Agnes,Ethel,Evelyn,Maud, Agatha, Mabel etc.
Old man nicknames Alfie, Archie, Albie. Freddie, Teddy etc.
Nature names Storm, Rainbow, River, Fox, Bear etc.
And then names can't catergorise Finley, Harley, D'arcy, Grace.
It seems with my list I dislike far more names than I like tbh.

Posy - unbearably twee
Juno - name for a male dog
Arlo - sounds like it's missing a consonant
Claudia - heavy sounding
Marnie - sounds like the shortening of a name which doesn't exist
Imogen- sounds like the name of a biotech company

Ruben. Sophia. Anything with a made up spelling to make it look 'indervijewel'. Milo. Desperately pretentious old names - Mabel, Ethel etc. And any name that was only picked because of the nickname/shortening. Just fuck off.

Surnames for first names.

I understand why people get a bit bristly about it; its not nice if your DCs names come up as ones people hate which you may even have been passionate about before they were conceived.

I love quite a few names people are saying they dislike eg Romilly.

Jasper and Lucien. They sound so wet to me.

And what is so wonderful about Alexander? I think I am the only person in the world who doesn't get the attraction.

Elizabeth, Emily etc. you say timeless Classic, I say dull, dull, dull.

Matilda. I'm tripping over them & I don't understand why.

Bailey, Cooper, surme types.
Jayden, cayden, brayden & the likes.

Perisphone ? Only because i dont know how to say or spell it and it looks like periscope somebody on a thread tried to break it down for me i still couldnt grasp it makes me twitchy. Oh and they name /nick name thing just call your kid the nick name

I think every granny chick name covers it Honestly some names are best left in the past.
